mag tube extension spring

I got a mag extnesion for a rem 870, and need to cut the mag spring to fit.
new spring is larger in diam. than old one. how do I measure new spring so it works? this is a 2 shot extension, for 870 20ga,giveing me 6 in the tube.

If its the spring that came with the extention---DO NOT CUT IT-----just stuff it all in there.

This requires some cut-and-try, but a good rule of thumb is the spring should be 6-10" longer than the full length of the magazine tube.
