Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

I need some advice......

....have recently shot a remington 11-87 with magazine extention. I fired 2 3/4" shells loaded with 32 grams of #7 1/2 birdshot. Compared with similar shells loaded with 24grams of identical sized birdshot, the former kicked HARD. :(

Am seriously thinking of buying a remington 870 marine magnum as a utility shotgun but seeing is that pump actions kick harder than semi autos, I am becoming apprehensive.

Therefore, for firing 2 3/4" shells with 1 1/8oz loads, I have 3 questions:

1) Can the marine magnum be fitted with a magazine extention? It already has a 6+1 capacity but I'm told that additional shells will weigh down the gun and reduce felt recoil.
2) The website says that it comes with an R3 recoil pad. How effective is this for recoil dampening?
3) The gunshop's padded shotgunning vest costs too much $$$$, how effective is a thick towel draped over a shoulder as a makshift recoil absorber?

1,that MM has an extension.

2, the R3 is one of the better pads.

3,a little.

Use 24 gram loads and work up.Read the threads on proper mounting techniques and kick to save you some trouble.

HTH....

You can not put a bigger extension on the MM as it would stick past the end of the barrel.

As for the R3 recoil pad it is made by "Limbsaver" which is an excellent recoil pad. I have an R3 and it does make quite a difference vs a regular recoil pad.

Buy a pump and shoot a box of slugs thru it. You'll never complain about target and field sized loads again! :D

The key to shooting any shotgun is technique. My wife easily puts 3.5 inch magnum turkey loads through a Benelli Nova 18 inch shotgun, but she know how to pocket the gun.

The Marine magnum has enough heft to it that as long as you learn to shoot it you should have no problem. I really have found that with most folks it is more about the technique and less about the actual recoil impulse.
