I mentioned the Remington 750 in another thread about .308 Winchester semi-auto rifle options, but I don't have any first-hand experience with the Remington semi-autos, old or new, or the pumps.

As someone that appreciates more a low-profile approach than a tricked out AR or AK, I am wondering if folks can share their experiences with Remington autoloaders, old o new, in .308 or .223? I'd also be interested in hearing about the 7600 pump rifles as well.

The idea is to pick up a solid, reliable gun that can shoot cheap surplus ammo and serve as a SHTF rifle if need be but not look the part. Would a Remmy do the trick and, if so, which one?

Thanks!

Do a search here for 742 or 7400 and you'll drag back a lot of threads. I had a 7400 and hated that beast more than any other rifle I've ever owned. I've posted why in a whole bunch of different threads.

Be aware that the aftermarket 'higher-capacity' magazines for these rifles are all universally JUNK, or at least they were last I checked. I could not get any of them to work worth a darn.

I'd rather have an SKS or even a Mini in 7.62x39/6.8SPC, assuming that I'd not need to be shooting at elk-size critters. A used lightweight BAR would be a fine choice. A Saiga would likely be far more satisfying.

Yes, I hated that rifle THAT much. :)

...though I don't think they're imported to the US. Not sure.:D

I have a 7615 pump in 223. It is a neat little rifle that weighs 7 pounds unloaded. It takes AR magazines. You can use the factory 10 round and it doesn't have the martial rifle look to it. I guess you could use 5 rounders if you can find them. They are popular in Austrailia because the Aussies can't own semi-autos.

Since it is built on a shotgun frame it points very well. I have mounted a scope on it once and it will shoot around 1" groups with off the shelf ammo. I like it best with the rifle sights only. I bought mine when they first came out. They are a little cheaper now. I see them at the GS for around $575-599 plus tax.
