Howdy all,
I recently bought a Rossi single shot 12 ga (with the .22lr matched barrel). I took it out last weekend to the range and I was very happy with it. It fired every .22lr (about 200rds) and a whole box of Remington Game Shot (25 rds) with no problems. However, when I tried a box of Remington Buckshot Express (2.75", 00BK, 9 Pellets). Of the 10 rounds I tried, one failed to fire at all (despite repeated hits) and 3 only fired on the 2nd hit. The one that failed to fire had a definite hit from the firing pin that appeared as deep/hard as on the fired shells.

Now as you can imagine, I was a little disturbed at the 40% initial failure rate with this ammo (especially in what I see as a load, 00BK, specifically for defense or hunting, where reliability is of prime importance).

Does Remington Buckshot have a reputation for hard primers or less than reliable firing? I'll be testing some Centurion shells this next weekend and I'm hoping they'll have 100% success and thus the issue is not with my shotgun but rather with the Remington ammo. Anyone have a similar experience or have some advice for me (this is my first shotgun btw but I have a number of other firearms).

I have been using Remington buckshot for many years. Some is new some is 20 years old I have never a shell that didnt fire on the first try in several different guns. I have had a couple bad birdshot shells in my life but havent had any buckshot shells fail me.
It is possible that you got some bad ones as I've seen them make a blunder recently with a box of 7mm Rem mag not to mention their sorry .22lr bulk packs.
For your sake I hope that it is an ammo problem but for the rest of the world I hope this doesnt foretell of things to come. I wont bash them but they do seem to be slipping in the QC dept.

Yeah, for that reason, I bought Federal .22lr which worked great.

I am hoping that maybe I just got a bad batch of some kind. Once I try the other ammo this weekend, I guess I'll know for sure.

Remington Buckshot Express fires without problem and patterns well for my 870 shotguns.

Maybe related to your issue:

I have a 20Ga and 12Ga Stoeger sxs shotgun and using Remington ammo they are both unreliable, misfiring 3 or 4 out of ten. Federal and any other ammo works fine. I have read that Remington uses hard primers and this is what causes the misfires.

Try a different brand.

It also could just be a bad round, the misfires that I had all fired on the second try.

Compare the shell rims. Maximum rim seat vs minimum shell rim can indeed lead to failure to fire malfunctions. Particularly so when combined with minimum firing pin protrusion.

That sounds like about the same proportion of failures I was having and most of them did fire on the second hit. I'll test out the Centurion ammo this weekend and hopefully it'll work better. I must confess I'm pretty excited about the Centurion Buck & Ball load...so fingers crossed for success.

Thanks for the input, all. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I ran some Centurion and more Remington Buckshot through this weekend, with no problems at all. So I suspect I must have just had a bad batch last time.

Remington wants to know about FTF in their ammo.

If you have the box, they will happily exchange.

If you care, visit your retailer : they may ALSO want to know about your lot of FTF ammo.
