Hi,

I'm new here and I think this is a great site.

I recently got a Remington 870b Express Magnum for $150. It was not in box, but has never been fired. Can anyone tell me if this gun fires the 3" shells as well as 2 3/4" shells?

Thank You.

James

870 express

It should show on barrell, however i belive they are chambered for 2 3/4 only

Welcome James!
The receiver is good to go if its roll-marked "Magnum".
Check the barrel. If its stamped "2 3/4 or 3" " then you're all set.

Thank you very much. It is on the barrell and says 2 3/4" or 3." For some reason, I had always been under the impresion that the express line was Remington's cheap line. But I guess it's a pretty nice SG.

Inexpensive? - Yes
Cheap? - Not by a long shot.

You'll be hard pressed to wear it out. They're as tough as they come and the one you have will serve for generations.

Get out and shoot it when you can then be sure to post a range report. I imagine you'll be smiling when you do.:D

Thanks again for all of your help. I will definately do going to the range soon and let you know how it performs for me if you are interested. :)

James12g,

Welcome aboard- hope you like it here.

Your receiver might not be marked 'Magnum', but if your serial # ends in the letter M you should be good to go as far as the receiver is concerned. Make sure your barrel is marked for 2 3/4 or 3" shells too and you should have no trouble.

NOTE that with a shotgun, more is not necessarily better, enough is plenty. Do yourself a favor and start off with light loads, no need for 3" magnums (or even 2 3/4" magnums) early along. They cost more to shoot and beat you up more as far as recoil is concerned to boot.

You got a pretty good deal on your gun. What barrel came with it?

Do let us know how your first range trip went. Note the threads linked at http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=2766 , give some of those dealing with basics a good read before you head to the range.

Stay safe,
