Remington E-clip

I broke the little E-clip on the safety on an old style rem 700 trigger, can I use any e-clip that will fit or do I need to go back with remington factory part? The factory part is more elongated than regular e-clips and fits over two little bumps(I asume to keep it from rotating). Thanks

Yeah, you're OK with a hardware store clip that fits well.

I think that the reason for the elongated clip and the two bumps is to keep the clip oriented in a way that it's less likely to fall downward if it were to somehow break an arm. That way they hoped to keep the safety working even if the clip failed.

It's probably overengineered safety emphasis.
