I seem to be about to inheret one of these soon so Im somewhat anxious. To start off the bluing is original, its fading abit, but fading EVENLY. THe only real loss of bluing is the bolt, the action bar, and the magazine where it enters the reciever.

My questions are on shootability/saftey. THe gun hasnt been cleaned in years, the bore is horrible, i have a cleaner barrel after shooting 120 rounds of 20 year old remington bulk lead bullets in my .22lr. THe previous owner was a believer of over applying gun oil inside the reciever.

-The magazine tube and forearm assembly is slightly wobbly, the magazine guide ring is loose where it is dovetailed into the barrel, the part that screws to the magazine cap is loose in its dovetail to.
-common occurence with modern remington 870s, but is this a concern for such an old gun? The barrel is ROCK solid to the reciever.

-The action is a bit stiff. It takes alot of force to work the slide after pulling the trigger, its alot easier to open if i push the button on the side of the breech bolt to open.
-is this a sign of too much gunk in the action or a spring may be shot?

-What is the purpose of the hole in the reciever right behind the barrel serve? THe "cartridge case head" is cool, but is it a sign that they designed it in to vent pressure form the reciever if a cartridge burst during firing?

The remington 14 and 141 were very popular deer guns, especially in states like PA. I have a 14 in .35 remington which shoots just fine. I would strongly recommend having yours gone over by a compentent gunsmith prior to firing.

One of the great things about these rifles is that you can use pointed bullets, unlike other mag. fed h/p rifles. The mag. is spirraled so the bullet point never makes contact with the primer of the ctg. in front of it.

I wondered on the spiralling on the magazine.
On this one, the only problem in the barrel is that it is DIRTY from lack of cleaning. Everything seems nice and sharp in the rifling at the moment, gonna have to get some new cleaning gear.

How do you get the magazine and fore stock off the gun? I could swear the bear is screwed into the reciever, and everything seems to be kept inplace by that annoying barrel band.
