But Believe it or not, I saw a Remington 700 ADL at Wallyworld tonight that was only $325. That would be better than the 770.

Yeah, cuz that was such a great rifle.

Sure the 710 had decent accuracy (not "super-accurate" as they claim), but it was a serious POS. Not a rifle that you will want to have for years and years.

Dick's sporting goods has the 111 savage with detachable magazine listed for 329 with scope. Does savage make a short action with DM like the 111 FCXP3?

Yes. All savage short actions are two digit (Model 10, 11, 12, 14, 16) versions of the 110. Model 11 would be short action 111, model 10 would be short 110, model 12 short 112, etc.

Maybe if you're a pawnshop owner, or need either a new jack handle or tomato stake for your garden.

Go with the Savage, or even the Stevens Model 200, which dispenses with the silly liability-lawyer Accutrigger.

There are even good deals on Remington 700s out there, just keep your eyes open.

As others have said, get the Savage. I've handled the Remington 770, and I was not impressed. I loved my Savage 110 in 30-06 (finances demanded I sell it).

Quality will laregely be the same, though the Savage will be finished better and will have the Accutrigger. If you plan on keeping the stock trigger, the Accutrigger is nice. Otherwise, the Stevens is cheaper and in all other ways (beyond the stamped name) the same. The Stevens won't have a scope, which you'll have to supply. That said, the scope on the Savage isn't all that great and is only worth $25 or so. Figure that's wasted money if you have to buy another scope.

At the present, the 111 has become the basic package rifle. It became the haven for the last of the pre-accutrigger Savage actions being assembled. They are really nice rifles. One of the two Savages I once owned was a 111C like the one you show.

If you get it, I have an extra detachable magazine, original Savage, that I'll sell for $10 plus shipping (what a bargain!).

i was in the same situation about 2 weeks ago...and i went for the Savage. I went to walmart to check out the 770 it felt horrible. the action was sloppy, the gun just felt cheap. i went to dicks and picked up the savage, and it was a no contest. i picked up the savage in 30-06, out of the box with no adjustment at all it was putting shots on the paper at 50 yds, after sighting it in at 100 yds i noticed the scope was coming loose after taking 20+ shots and i didn't have the tool to tighten it back down so we couldn't really sight it in.

i have shot both, and like both, and they are actually both pretty accurate, and the remmy is quite light, and easy to hump around.
That being said, the Savage is better, more longer lasting, better made.
