I just inherited a unique gun, it is a Remington Model 11, it appears identical to a Browning Automatic 5 Shotgun and I am looking for information.

http://www.remington.com/library/history/firearm_models/shotguns/model_11.asp

This page on the Remington site is interesting, it says that the serial number range for 12 ga. is 10,000 to 510,750 the serial number on mine is 766XXX which is outside that range.

I e-mailed Remington for info but any data is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jeff

No Sportsman anywhere on the gun, it says Model 11 on the bolt and Remington the patent data on the back of the reicever and a Pheasant engraved below the ejector opening.

I'll post the reply from Remington.

Improved 3-shot version of the Model 11 with a re-styled beavertail fore-end and decorations on the breech

I would say you have the Sportsman version .

I just got one of those the other day myself. I'm wondering if parts are interchangable with the Auto-5. (Friction rings, barrels, mag tubes, forends, stocks, etc.)

My Sportsman was bought brand new in 1948 by my father. Its serial number is in the model 11 range but the bolt is engraved with the "Sportsman" lettering. I think that Remington was just using up spare parts at the end of the run on these guns without regard for the proper sn range.

The short answer is no - parts are not generaly interchangable between the Remington and Browning guns. Friction rings maybe, but most parts no.

11s are excellent shotguns. I inherited one from a relative, complete with Polychoke and solid rib. A set of Browning friction rings and springs fit and constituted a 10K round rebuild, according to the smith. A cousin has it now.

Most parts do not interchange.

This one was my grandfathers as well, my father had it for about 20 years and he just gave it to me as a Christmas gift.

As an aside the Remington site says all the Sportsman Guns have an S before the serial number, this one does not.

Hopefully Remington will be able to come up with some more information.

Thanks for the information.

Jeff

I just got one in a trade. There are no marks on the receiver other than the serial number. The barrel says it is a model 11A. The wood has been refininshed, looks good. The metal has been sprayed with some sort of paint, appears to be one of the bake on coatings. I want to find out some more about it. I would like to have it rebuilt and reblued. Shoots good.
