My grandfather was quite the marksman and some time ago he gave my dad his Remington model 12. My dad and I were looking at it and trying to figure out the model type and when it was made. Sadly my grandfather is no longer with us so we can't ask him and the guides I found on the internet seemed not to apply to this particular firearm. We are mostly interested in when it was produced but it would also be nice to know what specific model it is (12a, 12b ect). It is difficult to identify because it was modified somewhat. It has a 24" barrel, flip up hooded front sight, Lyman tang sight (probably aftermarket?) and is marked for .22 Short, Long and LR. There looks to have been a notch rear sight at one point but it was removed. There is no checkering on the stock but the foregrip has ribs cut into it. Im pretty sure it's pre 1921 because I think thats when Remington started their current serial number system and the SN is not of that format. It is drilled for a scope mount (We have the scope, 3X magnification and about 16" long) but I assume that is an aftermarket modification. Thanks for any help with this, we have not had much luck so far. It is a really nice looking and feeling historical rifle as well as a family heirloom.

Edit- I forget to mention it has an octagonal barrel like most model 12s

Remington's sit has a sn lookup

eta: Sit? Site, site. I just checked the Remington Society. They used to have the sn lookup. They still may. For members.

According to one site, a 24" octagon .22 S,L,LR is a 12C. But it should be so marked.
You mention a Lyman tang sight, the front sounds like a Beach combination.
The scope sounds interesting.

How about some pictures?

Thanks, thats what I thought it might be but it didn't fit some of the specifications on a site I looked on. Il try to get a few pics but they will probably not be great. I tried the SN lookup on Remington's site but that system of SN's only goes back to 1922 or so and there are no results when I tried looking it up.

Here are a few pictures
