Does anyone know the recommended velocity range is for Remington 125 grain half-jacketed hollowpoints (.357)? The ones with the scalloped jackets.

I wrote to Remington and they wouldn't tell me because "we don't give out reloading data". (which of course is not what I was asking for, but when I tried again to explain what I wanted, they just reread the same script to me.)

I have a big box of 'em, and I want to use them in .357 Magnum loads, but wonder if they will just disintegrate instead of expand if I push them too hard out of a rifle.

I don't know about the 125 grain bullets, but I push the 158 grain JHP (with the large, exposed lead tip and scalloped jacket) out of a Winchester M94AE Trapper at around 1700 fps with great performance (and no leading, even though the jacket barely extends around the curve of the bullet 'ogive.'

I have the same good luck with the Remington 240gr JHP .44 Mag. bullet (which is similarly constructed) out of a Winchester M94AE Trapper at about the same velocity.

All my bulk bullets are Remington for 9mm X 19, .38 Special, .357 magnum and .45 ACP.

140 grain Remington SJHP loaded to 1200 fps from a 4 3/4" barrel have taken deer a couple of times from my Colt SAA. Run them as fast as a reputable load data manual will allow...But start at the minimum powder charge and work up to maximum and watch for signs of over pressure...

Factory velocity data is 1,450 fps from a 4" barrel. I load these in Remington cases on top of 13.8 gr of Blue Dot and lite it off with a CCI small pistol magnum primer. This is an accurate load and it chrono's right at 1,450 fps from my 4" revolvers +/- a few fps depending upon the gun.

The muzzle flash is pronounced with this load but not excessive. Here's a picture of this load being fired from a Ruger BH 4-5/8".

Guys,

Let's remember that it is famed 125 gr. Remington SJHP we are talking about! This bullet is used in Remington R357M1 load listed on the very top of the stopping power charts. It doesn't "just disintegrate" - bg's hit with it do.

I understand that, but I want to use it in a rifle. So it might be zipping along at 2100 fps instead of 1450.

For 125gr bullets out of a .357 mag in a rifle use the Remington JSP not the JHP bullet. Rifle velocities with these bullets are high enough to give a soft point reliable expansion.

I wouldnt worry about them myself. Load some up and if they fly apart lower the load some. Just load up five at a time.

I wouldn't push these bullets much past 1650-1700 fps which would mean a light .357 Mag load in a rifle. Loaded in a .357 Maximum at this velocity from a revolver, they do come apart.
