The Remington R30 chambered in 30 Remington AR is a real odd duck. The upper is almost completely proprietary though compatible with a standard AR-15 lower. But it also runs a funky proprietary magazine to feed reliably with its very odd bolt and short and fat cartridge. The magazine only feeds from the left side. Those factory magazines are very hard to find now aday and unlikely to ever be made again. (You can modify some 450 Bushmaster magazine to work with 30 RAR uppers)

So if you need a factory original 30RAR magazine the link above is to one of the few (only?) remaining sources. I order two more for my R30 and will update the thread when they arrive with condition of said magazines. I currently only have one good factory 4rd magazine and two factory 10rd magazines. I also have a few other modified 450 BM magazines that will work but the 4rd magazines are really nice for hunting as they fit in a pocket nicely and barely stick below the magazine well when in the gun.

Yeah Remington only made rifles in it for about two to three year and then only ran small annual batches of ammo up to the first bankruptcy.

The proprietary upper also really hurt the cartridge. Had Remington released several calibers (223, 243, 264, 277, 284, 338, 358, 458 etc, <- not all of those but a few) in short order based on that modified 284 Win/450 BM cartridge in addition to the 30 RAR it might have gone somewhere. Then all those proprietary parts and magazines could have been used for a whole family of cartridges.

450 Bushmaster was pressure limited (38,500 PSI) due to the weaker bolt lugs of the AR-15 bolt and smaller diameter barrel/barrel-extension. The 30RAR used a bolt and barrel extension model on a modified LR-308 and thus ran at much high pressures (55,000 PSI). Imagine what 450 Bushmaster would be like if they did the 30 RAR upper when they created the 450 Bushmaster cartridge and ran 450 BM at 55ksi.

I always thought the 30AR was "worth the squeeze" if the parts and components were still avaliable. Especially for a hunting gun.

I've given some thought though to a 30-450BM wildcat. It would use all standard 450BM parts except for the barrel. Might not give as much velocity, but would certainly outpace any other 30cal cartridge that would fit in an otherwise standard AR15 upper.

I love that idea. The only catch and it's small and I think beatable is for some reason when they necked down 450 BM to make 30 RAR they increased the rim diameter. So if your using a 45 BM bolt you would need to create the process to neck down existing 450 BM brass but I am sure that is doable.

As far as wildcating goes it'd be pretty simple. Especially if your chamber allows for you to not turning the case mouths.

Neck it down in a couple steps, fire forming would just serve to "sharpen" the shoulder, you'd already have your brass 99% formed after necking it down.

I don't think you'd quite get the same velocity as the 30AR, but you'd get alot of it.

I like throwing the idea out there and hoping someone else runs with it and I can just buy a barrel from someone in the near future.

With the new 8.6 Blackout making a splash on the market think how much fun we could have with simply necking 450 BM down to .338 and make a subsonic only version of the 8.6 Blackout that would work on the AR-15 plate form and use 450 BM parts and brass and magazines. 338 Pipsqueak...

On a side note (OP note?) so far service from Center Fire System seems pretty good. This is my first time doing business with them. I placed the order this morning and already have a USPS tracking number. That is promising, we shall see.

Well the service from Centerfire System was pretty good. Good communication and reasonably fast shipping. Ordered Monday and I received them today (Friday). Given that no one has made a magazine for the R30 since ~2011 I have to say the condition is excellent and they are identical to the other factory 4rd magazine I have. I now have three factory 4 rd magazines, two factory 10rd magazines and a few modified 450 Bushmaster magazines I have made work the the 30 RAR bolt. Now to get out and test them to be sure, but they look good.
