Im looking for a new 223. I was thinking about a Remington 700 SPS Varmint or a Savage 12 FV. I would put a Leupold VX-1 4-12 on either of them. Thanks for the input.

PS. Id be shooting under 500 yards.

For reference, I have a 700P and a 12 LRPV.

Buy what you like. It seems that there are more savage lovers on here than rem lovers, so the answer you will get is the savage. If the savage you buy doesn't have the target accutrigger, the lightest you can set it is 2.5 lbs iirc. I adjusted the trigger on my 700P to 1.25-1.5 lbs.

Go with whichever you can get a better deal on. They are both great guns.

If you want you can customize either one of them later on, I've shot the Rem PSS .223 it seems just a little smoother action than the Savage 12 FV that I own, I liked the trigger on the Savage a little better, you can probably get into the Savage a little cheaper. Both are sub 1" shooters.
The glass you're talking about will be perfect for either one!

For 500yd shooting you WILL want to choose the rifle that features the fastest twist rate the Savage has a 1-9" twist rate that'll likely shoot up to 75grn bullets, the Remington has a 1-12" twist rate that'll top out with 64grn or lighter bullets.

A 1-12 twist .223 simply will not cut the mustard for 500yd shooting.

I'm a Remington guy but krochus has the best argument for the Savage.

Just to throw another option out. There are a lot of heavy barreled AR's out there that will shoot with any of the bolt rifles and can be had for about the same price. My Rock River shoots under 1" at 200 yards and has a 1-8" twist. It cost me $700 5 years ago. Mine has the 16" heavy barrel and match trigger. The short barrel probably would be a little lacking for velocity for 500 yard shots but longer barrels are available.

i have a savage 10fp, and out of the box it shoot sub 1" its a great rifle for the money but if your planning to put a lot of money into it to customize it to your personal likings id got with the remington, there is just and endless supply of aftermarket parts and accessories you can put on it, plus the Remington looks better

Yeah I would want the 1 in 9" twist for use with the heavier bullets for long range use. My Savage 12BVSS and Rem 700LTR both have the 1 in 9" and both shoot great with 69 Sierra MatchKings.

My 1 in 12" 700 SPS Varmint shows great accuray results with the lighter 52 grain MatchKings. The 700 SPS Tactical has the 1 in 9" twist barrel although the velocity will be less than the 26" guns.

Don`t kid yourself into thinkin` that the issue is as it is "on here". The Savage rifles of today are a far cry superior to Remington when comparing them by class. Sure a Savage 110 isn`t a top of the line rifle but it shoots accurately and it is very low priced thus many people buy them. Remington has nothing to compare in the price range of the 110 but now comparing the Rem. 700 to the Savage 12 is comparing two rifles in the same class and as you`ve seen here and in most of the mags. Savage is the better of the two and remains at a lower price. Savage 12 won 2 awards in 2007 and rifle of the year in 2006 so I`d say that qualifies as other than "here".

both are like legos and both have a good reputation. So, shoulder one, shoulder the other, buy one. If not flip a coin, I think you will be happy with either. BTW I own 2 savage rifles. I'm thinking of swapping the barrels out (sporter to bull, then back again for deer/elk season) can your remington do that? Is it important that it can?
