I am considering buying either a Savage 12FV or a Savage 40 Varmint, either one in .223. I will be shooting it off the bench for recreational purposes only. The Varmint model has better looks and features but does not have the Accutrigger. Has anyone had experience with the factory trigger on this model (I know that most Savages are a bit heavy and stiff out of the box). The 12 FV has the Accutrigger. Any advice will be most appreciated! :)

Anyone? I haven't been able to find anyone who owns or has shot a 40 Varmint and don't want to take a chance on the trigger unless I have some firsthand evaluations.

definately 12FV

12FV over the 40
it's got a magazine, the 40 is single shot
it's got the accutrigger, the 40 is standard savage (not so nice)

40 over the 12FV
it's lighter, but you said it's for bench only so it doesn't matter
it's wood, so it doesn't scare the antigunners nearly enough.

Thanks, otomik! That's the kind of comparison that I was looking for! I think I will definitely go for the 12 FV. nipprdog: I appreciate the link. I did do that kind of adjustment on a Savage 10 FP that I used to own and it was fairly easy. However, I like the idea of being able to adjust the trigger without having to take the rifle apart. Thank you both for your input! :)

you still have to remove the stock to adjust an accu-trigger.
:D

It doesn't take any time to remove the stock... and then just verify the torque on the screws when replacing it... ANYONE that can adjust the trigger should be able to remove and replace the stock.

My vote would be for something with the accutrigger. I had a 12FVSS and a 10FP in 223 and both were far more accurate than I could consistantly hold.

Savages are good guns if you can live with the flimsy stock.
