just bought a 12 gauge remington wingmaster magnum from a friend for $300, is this a good price?
he says it has 28" ribbed barrel/full choke/it takes 3" and 2-3/4 shells/and noticed it says magnum on the receiver, has some nice wood grain on the stock, and the guns is super clean. will post pics once we do the transfer

You betcha. What year of production? A decent condition Wingmaster is worth more than $300 any day of the week in my books, let alone a good one. Get your pictures up so we can admire it, too.

I think it is a decent price. You could certainly find one online for cheaper if you can do transfers cheap, and are patient.

If you are happy with the price, go for it.

If you need to shoot steel you can get steel rated tubes installed, or get a RemChoked barrel. Heaven knows if there is anything on planet Earth that just about anything is available for, it's a Wingmaster. I got a Light Contour RemChoked barrel for mine, and consider it perfection with that or the original 'Full' barrel.

I own a shotgun like you described. Its a 1971 wm 28" vent rib magnum, full choke. Mine shoots steel shot just fine and is pretty much dedicated for me as a duck/turkey gun. No its probably not the best choice for shooting dove but let them get out there a little ways with #9 shot and it will work just fine. Accidently took mine to the sporting clays range. I quickly learned to let the clays get out there a little bit before shooting. Still hit 37-38 out of 50. Nothing to brag about I know but considering it was totaly the wrong gun for the application i was happy.

It is a great deal if you want a 28 inch full choke barrel.

Will it shoot steel shot?

If not, you will have limited hunting applicability.

Funny, every place I have lived only required steel for migratory waterfowl hunting. All upland could be shot with lead.

Personally, I would prefer a Mod choke. Barrels can be swapped or threaded for changeable chokes if desired

Full chokes aren't really meant for steel shot. Steel shot doesnt compress like lead shot. You can shoot steel out of it, but will eventually ruin the barrel. I wouldn't be shooting a slug through it either. I recommend you pick up a barrel that accepts chokes or is at least a fixed modified.

thanks guys, dont know year of production. finally got around to transfering it. some pics

Remington will tell you when it was made if you give them the serial number. That's some nice wood.

Virginian is absolutely right: LC or Light Contour barrel if you want to replace it with a RemChoke barrel.

Yeah, you definitely did good. I'd pay $300 for a gun like that without thinking twice (but looking it over twice, naturally :) )

Very nice. I think you did better than fine.

You can shoot steel out of it, but will eventually ruin the barrel
I dont believe the above statement to be true any more with todays steel shot. Mainly because of the improvements in shotcups.

Scuff throughs in good quality ammo are virtually nonexistant these days. If the compressability is built into the shotcup, and the shotcup doesn't scuff through, then the steel isn't touching the barrel.

Now your full choke barrel may or may not pattern well with steel. But I've shot a lot of steel through a lot of different choke restrictions, including full, with no visual or measureable harm to the barrel. In your case a $200 Remchoke Barrel might just be the ticket.

Beautiful shotgun. It's worth $300 easy. How far would $300 take you on a new shotgun... would it look like that?

You did great!

thanks again guys for the comments and great info. i recall seeing on the barrel, remington and the word full, and also 3" im assuming it shoots up to 3" shells

Excellent buy. I have a normal Wingmaster myself with what I guess is a standard modified choke. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to shoot it. (It's an inheritance so it's not in my house). Beautiful guns though. I really love mine.

While it looks great, I don't like the bluing because any little print/smudge will stick to it.

Can't wait for a chance to be able to shoot it.

i think people maybe confusing wingmaster with a plain old 870express.
as you can see yours has a nice blue and chrome bolt and lovely wood.

worth every bit of 300 and probly double that. go price out new Wingmasters, not just parkerized 870 HD

anyway, that barrel looks longer than 28 maybe its teh angle of the pic. you can get a nice blue adjustable choked 26 or 28 incher for a few hundred. also can get a 18-20 HD barrel if you want only one gun. 870 is quite modular.

you got a good deal, take your firend to dinner and love that 870.
