I am interested in getting a Remington model 700 VS LH in .308 for accurate shooting over longer distances and was wondering what everyone thinks of the rifle. Is the stock any good? What kind of all Steel rings and bases would you recomend. I would like a fixed 10x of high quality with a tactical reticle that costs around $500 any recomendations. also I have seen references to a model 700 P or police but it is not listed on the websight and I was wondering if they still make one. I know this is a lot of different questions so answer what you will. Thanks.

i have the vls, so i don't know about the synthetic stocks on the vs. if you change your mind and opt for a vls, the stock on it is very good - very stable.

for bases... if you don't mind spending the money, badger makes a very good base. if you want to keep price down, go w/ a ken farrell base. the farrell base is very heavy, solid steel (like the badger). the major difference between the two that i know of is that the badger base is more of a picatinny style, where the farrell only has 3 or 4 slots. also, do go to the trouble of bedding the base to the receiver.

for rings, warne rings are very good for this application. very heavy, solid rings.

for a scope, the only scope i would put on such a rig is leupold.

There are a lot of threads archived at The Firingline on the VS versus P/LTR question. My recollection is that a lot of people thought that the VS rifle gave you as much accuracy for a lower cost -- but I could be mis-remembering.

I have a good deal of trigger time behind a 700 LTR, but none with a 700 VS. The LTR rifles are extremely accurate right out of the box -- and I like the 20 inch barrel.

If you're looking for better accuracy, buy a used rifle.

Let me clarify that...

Call Shooters Corner (you can find their number at www.benchrest.com) and tell Bob or Craig that you want an accurate rifle, etc... They'll ask you some questions.

What you'll likely end up with is a Remington 700 that has had the action trued, with the original barrel converted to scrap, and a match-grade barrel installed. The thing will likely be bedded in its stock. And it _will_ likely be able to shoot better than you can. Definitely better, unless you get very, very lucky, than a straight-from-the-factory rifle.

And it won't cost you a lot more than you'd spend on a new rifle.

Guess I got lucky with a factory VS. Handloads in the .3" area, sub MOA groups look really probable out to 1k (if I can ever get more trigger time at that range). It wears Badger Ordnance rings and base and a USO ST-10 scope. And yes, it DOES shoot better than I can.

I'm not in love with the stock, but it's functional.

Lots of horror stories around the net about Remington QC...probably no more or less than any other company. You might get lucky with a NIB rifle, you might get slammed with used tent pole someone's trying to dump.

My 2 cents... get a rifle, VS or otherwise, new or used, whatever you can afford...put 700 or so rounds through it...maybe take a LR course at Badlands or Storm Mountain... THEN figure out the extras you'd like, and if it needs the attention of a good 'smith, ('cuz Bogie makes some good points).

I have one of the first batch of the 700VS LH .308. I ordered it sight-unseen several years ago, and loved it. Had to return it to the factory because there were a few rifles that were sold with off-center drilling of the receiver...you can tell by the gap being unequal between the bbl and the stock when comparing both sides.

The replacement was centered, but didn't have a slickety slick bolt action that some other rifles I've fired.

However it is a great rifle, and shoots subMOA all day long with 168gr handloads. The stock, made by HS Precision, is very utalitarian, and I find it quite attractive. I like the smaller forened compared with the PSS and other long-range specialty stocks available.

I use Mk4 rings and bases and plopped a Tasco SS 10x42 scope on it. holds zero, looks tacticool, and is good optics for the money.

With this setup (left the bbl free-floated rather than bedded), I am able to ding a 10" plate at 600yds all day long.

I have a IOR 20 moa base and IOR 30mm rings on my Remington VS in .308. If you want to shoot out to 1000 yards, you are going to need the 20 moa base. Even with a Leupold 6.5-20x50 Long Range Target scope I couldn't go past 800 yards without that angled base. You can still find these rings at a good price at Sniper Country.
