So I have a Sig P229 SCT selling in the classifieds and also on gunbroker. I'm thinking seriously about taking the money and buying my first long range rifle. The two rifles I'm considering in .308 are the Remington 700 SPS Tactical and the Tikka T3 Varminter. What I'd like to know is which would you choose and why? Thanks in advance for the responses.

I've got too many Remingtons. Been playing with their stuff for decades. Went to look at a TIKKA a few weeks back and am sold on it - fits me, smoothest bolt I have ever cycled, the list goes on. I'll be ordering a TIKKA in 308 - Varmint. I think it's the best combo out there :)

I have an SPS and am very happy with it. I have gotten to handle a couple tikkas and they seemed very nice as well.

I think either one will work well for you. Have you handled both? If not, I strongly suggest you do that before buying either one.

I have owned both. The Tikka is a league unto itself, and any hands-on side by side comparison will make that abundantly clear. The Tikka is better finished, better fitted, more accurate across a broad variety of ammo, and in general is a bargain compared to any other similar offering.

I sold the Remington and kept the Tikka (and then bought T3 Lightweights for still hunting). I am *that* sold on the T3 platform, relative to other commercial push-fed options.

If it is like the last Remington I bought, the only thing it will do from the factory is RUST.:fire:

I love the Remington 700 SPS Tac. It is the only gun that I have made an accurate 500 yard shot with (but I have only tried with 2 guns and the Tikka is not one of them). You can't go wrong with either, but the plus side of getting the SPS Tactical is that you are getting the 700 action with it in case you want to modify and possibly build a new rifle later.

My Rem 700 SPS tactical shoots sub-moa groups - and that was out of the box. The ability to modify a remington 700 should never be underestimated. I just bought a bell and carlson stock and it dropped right in and fits like a glove. if it's your first rifle, the remington 700 is a great choice. I would imagine the tikka fans already own multiple rifles. the 700 lets you explore options that otherwise would not be available to you.

Remington and you support Americans in the progress.Tikka feels good would like to try one.My only thing about Tikka is how can you load one cartridge if you need to? There is no room for my fingers in the opening of the chamber.I look at all things in a hunting rifle.

Down here in KY it is very common to own the SPS TAC and a Bushnell elite Tac scope... People around here are crazy over shooting 6-7-800 yds with this set up... COST EFFICIENT. I personally do not own it but on more than one occasion have watched guys walk the steel out to 800 yds with this gun, might i add with no problem or changes to the rifle. my buddy shot a ragged hole with his out of the box with FED GMM 168's. THESE GUNS ARE CRAZY ACCURATE with GMM ammo... I am saving right now for one. MAKE SURE IF YOU BUY,, to buy the one that is threaded. They have lots of muzzle jump out of the 20 in barrel. NEEDS A BREAK.

I know I said Tikka but I don't think I was being fair. My Remington 700 in 7mm RUM shot .75" at 100 yards with my handloads. Shot 13 birds at 212 yards and 9 birds at 365 yards of a bypod. Not bad if you ask me. lol .My 7600 will do .75 [I'm stuck on .75] My dads 700 does .5" when we do our part. I know it was not asked about but my .257 Weatherby [SUB MOA] does .5 or less. Good luck on your new gun.

Tikkas are suposed to shoot 1 inch from the factory. Remington..... ? Buy a Tikka.
I have never shot a Tikka but a friend of mine has a SPS. I borrowed it last year for my son to shoot in a competition. And I will say I believe the gun would shoot less the 1/2" groups all day long at 100 yards. 1" at 100 just isn't terribly impressive.

If I wanted a long range rifle I would buy the SPS in a split second......But like I said, I've never shot a Tikka.
