Removing adhesive from a Marlin 336 stock.

I had installed a raised comb on my 35 Rem 336 (for scope use) that used adhesive to hold it it place. I removed the raised comb today along with the scope to install an XS peep sight. The adhesive remained on the wood stock. What chemical should I use to remove the adhesive while not damaging the stock finish. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Least potentially damaging to most ...

I would start with WD-40 ... no workee, then try alcohol ... no workee, then try mineral spirits ...

Wd-40 works and so does Hoppe's #9. Hoppe's smells better.
