removing laser etched logo

I have a receiver with a laser etched logo on it. The receiver is black and the logo is silver(ish). I want the whole thing black permanently. What are my options?

Laser mark is between .002 & .010" deep in the metal. The only way to remove it is filing/sanding. You can likely fill it with a fine filler like bondo glaze then duracoat the whole surface. No matter what you will have to refinish somehow. If quick and dirty is what you want than a paint or permanent marker tip in the engraving may make it much less visible.

Is the logo an importer's mark? If so, you cannot legally remove it but you can finish over it as long as it remains legible.

Not an importer mark...just the logo from the gun shop.

Sounds like you've got some good refinishing options.

I'm curious about what Miked7762 was talking about with the importer's markings. What's the deal there? How would anyone know if it was missing? I'm thinking of grinding mine off.

Easy. If a particular brand/model/configuration/caliber/serial number range was never manufactured here in the US, then it must have been imported. If so, it must have the importer's information.
Even if it were manufactured here, exported, and reimported, there is a record of that somewhere. Not likely to cause a problem as most LE/ATF won't be looking for that kind of thing unless the gun is used in a crime.
What if it gets stolen, used in a crime, and recovered. How will you explain the careful removal of the importer's mark. No thief would be that careful removing markings.

If it's an aluminum receiver, the color is just the raw aluminum where the coating is removed. There are commercial chemicals that darken aluminum, iirc they are a strong acid.

You don't give your sate so this may not apply to you. In my state Alabama it is against state law to remove(or permanently cover) ANY manufacturer's marking from a firearm. Check your state law first then proceed (or not).
