Hey all

There's a few rust spots on the front sight post on a parkerized gun I have here...

How do I go about cleaning that off, without messing up the parkerizing?

Using steel/bronze wool will mess up the matte finish too, right?

For rust spots on a park finished I use a K Tool Sanding Pen. The fine point removes the rust without effecting the surrounding surface. Then I just touch it up with cold blue. If the spots are not really big it well blend in and disappear.

I have found that Eezox is fantastic for cleaning and protecting park surfaces.

I will definately be oiling the parkerizing.... but that is after this rust spot is gone, right?

How do I go about getting rid of this rust spot now? Or is the finish already compromised, and I just have to remove the rust and the finish have to reparkerize that one spot?

Get you a bag of #0000 steel wool. It's very handy to have around. Put a spot of Break-Free CLP on the rust and lightly rub it with the steel wool. You WON'T hurt the finish I promise. Been there, done that.

Incidently, I just came in the house from Park'ing a couple of Mauser actions for a buddy of mine. If you ever want to do your own Park'ing, which is really easy, don't buy the mixture. Head over to the Surplus Rifle Forum, Metal Care & Cleaning Section and there you'll find simple recipes and instructions for Park'ing that work very well. I've done several rifles and a pistol or two and they come out very well.

Is there anything that I can use besides Break free CLP? I really only have access to hardware stores, no gun stores and I'm trying to not order things

I've heard bronze wool works too, or is 0000 steel ideal? I'd rather take it from someone who's done it before

Steel wool will do it. You can use most any light oil such as WD-40
