removing spray paint, now my barrel is gray not black

Ok I got a shotgun from a friend who spray painted it and then tried to remove the paint with acetone but now the barrel is not black but a grayish color. why is that? is the finish coming off?

After the acetone, have you tried re-oiling the metal?

yes and that seemed to help a little

I would suspect too that he didn't really truly get all the paint pigment completely out of the rough parkerized surface.

Keep washing longer with clean solvent & clean rags.
And then re-oil it
