I recently purchased a used barrel for my 870 & last night I noticed it has begun to get a touch of surface rust & what looks to be finger oil rust spots on it. What do you guys/gals do to remove & prevent this? I usually keep everything covered in a thin coat of oil to prevent this, but I haven't "coated" this barrel yet. I kind of forgot about it & stuck it in storage w/o doing anything to it first. :what:

I usually use a bit of 4/0 (0000) steel wool with a little light oil (Ballistol, Kroil, RemOil) and rub lightly. Usually does the trick.

When you get done, apply a good coat of Johnson's paste floor wax (in the yellow can, at the grocery store) to help keep it from happening again...

If the film of rust is very thin, a good rubdown with an oily cloth will take care of it. A little more agressive would be with brass wool and oil. Very agressive would be OOOO steel wool and oil. To keep it good, some people use oil. I prefer to get rid of all the oil and use paste wax on the externals to keep it free of rust. A search of the threads will show lots of them discussing rust removal and prevention.

I've had luck with OOO steel wool and oil on a very shinny pistol in the past.

The gunsmith that told me how to do it said don't drink beer or watch TV while doing the job.
