First of all I am a new user and I appreciate any feedback I can get. But I want to purchase a pump shotgun. Either a new Remy 870 express or a used Win 1300 at a pawn shop. I am new at buying any gun used so I don't know what to look for, the action felt good and it was in good shape (not mint) but good. The Remy is around $220 and the Win is $170. Neither are synthetic. Can someone give me some good advice. Oh yeah I am replacing a Maverick because for some reason shells would fall out from the bottom of the gun????Thanks for the feedback.

Welcome the THR 7!

For starters, shoulder both of them. See which one fits best and and is balanced to your liking. The 1300 was a bit light in the reciever for my liking.

What is your intended use? Is the barrel on the winny the correct length? Fixed choke or threaded for tubes?

Best of luck to ya and keep us posted.

It is for dove hunting mainly and HD if someone is stupid enough to break into my house. The Win is threaded and has a 28" barrel, the wood seems to be better than the Remy which has a 26" barrel. The both feel pretty good I am just not sure about buying from a pawn shop. I guess what I am asking is do you think the Win is worth the $45 discount?

Thanks

I have no kick with the Winchester as they are very good shotguns. My vote would be for the Remington 870 and you can find one pretty reasonable if you look around. I would suggest finding an older gun as they seem to be better in quality. :)

Which feels better to you?

Both shotguns are great, and fall under the big 4. The 870, however has a long track record.

The 870 also has a steel receiver vs. the 1300's alum. Therefore, it'll also recoil slightly less.

Both will outlast you if taken care of properly, but... in the end, the 870 would outlast the 1300.

Me personally, I use 870s, inspired mainly by this forum. :D

One Wingmaster for clay games, other Wingmaster for HD duty. :)

While my preferences for 870s are well known. the 1300 is a good shotgun. Get the one that feels best.

870. Brand new, only $45 more, proven track record, covered under Remington's warranty. Best of all, you don't have to wonder if the pawn shop guy scammed you.

That's my two filthy pennies.

Gun Test just did a comparison of Home Defense shotguns. 870, 1300 and Mossberg 590. Winchester 1300 won.

They were all evenly matched and each gun won out in different categories, so it really depends on what categories mean the most to you.

Anyway, since they were comparing the 18" home defence style models of the three guns, the article might not help so much when it comes to dove hunting. Here's the link to the article anyway, in case you're interested. It'll cost you a few bucks though. I only paid it because I was doing serious research for my HD shotgun.

Anyway, I agree with the guys here who point out that you'd get a totally brand new gun with a warranty if you paid only $45 more.

It's interesting that your choice of a NEW shotgun is a new Remington over a new Wilson. Why, if you got a new gun, would you pick the Remy over the Wilson? The answer to that, plus the warranty, might lead you to pick the Express over the Wison.

Just a thought.

I really like the M1300, I think for HD only, (Not waterfowl, like you want,) it is the best deal going out of the box. When I went for dove in Yuma, I borrowed a friends 1300 for a few birds, and it was a real good weapon.

But I prefer 870s. The 870 sounds like the better deal, with one caveat:

If the Remmy is new it will have the magEx dimples and the J-hook safety, whereas I don't believe the M1300 has any of that nonsense.

Thanks 870 it is

Thank oyu all for the feedback, I ended up buying a Remy 870 Express used for $199 from a local gun shop it came with a lifetime warranty thru their location since they have a full time gunsmith. The gun is excellent and feels great, again thanks for all the insight it really helped.

id go with the 870 and i see you did too.

winchester and mossberg have an aluminum receiver.

remington has a 4140 steel receiver.

steel will hold up much better in a "kaboom" situation, which is evidenced by this photo that I took from the Remington Armorer School in Ilion, NY. this shotgun was given a double-charged handload which would have exploded an aluminum receiver, causing shrapnel to possibly injure or kill the shooter.

the remington's receiver remained primarily intact and did not shrapnel. the steel barrel peeled open but did not shrapnel. very minor injury if at all sustained by the shooter which was due very much to the steel receiver.

sorry these dang photos are so big i dont know how to reduce them.
