Well.. Just when I thought I had settled and LV was the location to move to when I move back to the states; gf is rethinking it, and says Reno might be a better choice.

So someone update me, what are the gun advantages (if any) of Reno vs. LV?

LV has more anal laws from what I can remember, the specifics elude me at the moment..

Las Vegas brings to mind gambling and Wayne Newton. Reno brings to mind Janet. I'd need some mental work to get over that one. :)

Las Vegas is becoming an extension of California. I believe you need a 'permit' to buy a handgun in clark county. I'm south of Reno and there are no issues. Funny stuff down south. Northern Nv is cooler / nicer anyway.

reno_.jpg

Was just there last weekend... not much going on, sort of a small town. I recommend you visit before you move.

Reno is much smaller and much older and not as glitzy as LV. The Reno Gun Show at the Hilton runs 3 times a year and is huge. I'd suggest, like the other posters - visit before you commit.

In Las Vegas/Clark County, don't you have to register your handguns with the police?????

I know you don't in Reno, or the rest of Nevada.

J.B.

Clark County (Las Vegas and vincinity) requires to register a HANDGUN. You get a blue card for that and the whole thing is done in about 15 minutes. Longarms just require the Clinton-stuff.

Oddly, in Las vegas you can have your gun loaded in your car. Not so in NORTH LAS VEGAS! Here, the gun has to be unloaded, locked in an compartment and the ammo out of immediate acces. The odd thing is, you just dont know where North Las Vegas begins, or are you already in there, is the left side of the street Las Vegas or already North... Nice example for absolute superfluous law, created by busybodies (by the way, tinted auto glass is also prohibited in NLV and not in LV).

To look up details, check out www.packing.org.

seems like NV has been going downhill since that kenny guy was elected governor. Jerk wants to impose a business tax. Hello! Businesses relocate to NV for the regulations NOT the weather. imposing harsh taxes and regulations will drive new businesses to better states.

Twoblink, I have never lived in Vegas, only visited. I lived in Reno for six years and I loved it. In Henderson county(vegas) you must register handguns. In Washoe county(Reno) no problem. Do you want to live in a big city or a small city?

C.C. Ord. 12.04.210 "It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, give away, or permanently pass on to another person of any pistol, revolver or other firearm capable of being concealed unless the Transferor first registers, or causes the weapon to be registered to the new owner."
(taken from one of my "Blue Cards")
LV;
hot in summer sometimes kinda cold in winter,
desert elevation approx 2500 Ft above sea level,
dry +/- 4" rain annual,
mountains all around valley,
Mt Charleston to west, gets some snow, some skiing, trees, national forest.
Lake Mead to east, National Park/Recreation area, no trees, number one National Park for deaths (usually due to booze, heat and swimming, but some violence does occur there),
Hoover dam, Colorado River, Arizona across border,
4 - 5 hrs to LA on I-15, 2 - 3 hrs to So. Utah (beautiful country and people)...
Nellis AFB in North East part of valley, Nuclear Waste Repository (Dump = suppository) at test site 90+ miles north of town,
lots of displaced So Cal people with their associated interests, 1.3 million (+/-) in greater Metro area...
a couple of gun shops worth visiting on a regular basis,
nice airport
lots of desert around (outside of city please) to go shooting,
plenty of low end jobs,
some higher end jobs,
huge turnover,
some 4,000 - 5,000 new drivers license's issued here monthly (gaack),
International crowd down around the Strip (most locals avoid it like the plague)
Large Asian crowd (if thats a consideration to ya)
OK gunshows about 5 - 6 times a year (SHOT show sometimes, the old SOF convention/show is gone now)

I've lived here 25 years now and watched LV grow from some 380,000 (approx figure in 1978) up to the 1,000,000+ it is today.
I still love it here but liked the earlier days when I used to go plinking out where "Summerlin" is or where "Green valley" is or where "NLV" is growing into.

Reno;
smaller
older
more moisture (but not much)
Lake Tahoe actually has trees (National Park on NV side, houses galore on CA side)
Mountains all around,
Lots of winter snow (Mt. Rose got 5' last weekend, 18" at the lake level)
More ranchey (if ya know what I mean - Las Vegas used to be a cowboy town too)
Virginia City nearby, Carson City (State Capitol) too,
San Francisco some 3 - 4 hrs away
lots of desert around,
some good gunshops to visit on a regular basis
pretty good gunshows once in a while
"NO REGISTRATION OF FIREARMS"
Jobs are happening but not quite like LV (really depends on your field - teaching positions usually available anywhere)
A long way to Utah but some pretty places in between (Ruby Marshes comes to mind)
To my way of thinking, a "Friendlier" town than Las Vegas but more closed to newcomers (business wise) if that makes sense.

But I don't live in Reno, only wish I did (just to compare w/ LV) and visit maybe 6 - 7 times annually (business related)

Downtown Reno kinda reminds me of downtown Las Vegas and thats not really a good thing. Reno has a better University (UNR) than LV (UNLV) IMHO - older anyway

I do love NV, but when I quit working I want to take all my problems to So. Utah (or maybe Twin Falls ID)

Have fun

I'm not moving to Vegas for the weather!! So if the laws suck really badly, then probably not. But then again, I'm from the PRK, and so any laws in NV are better than the PRK!

I like Vegas because it's a relatively big city; the downtown strip is the plague, and the big strip is a tourist mob-fest.. But if you avoid both places, things are pretty good in LV.

But lately, I've been thinking about fresher air, better weather, and better gun laws..

Hmm.. Maybe I should open that TN book up again for consideration..

But I want to live in a small town with big town access..

two, well, Reno bills itself as the "biggest little city in the world.":D

From someone who was where you were years and years ago, and could not stand D.C. or Chicago, focus on the gig first. Men are defined by what they do. Get a good gig first.

The Land of Orange is nice. But wherever you go, there you are--location will take care of itself. Did I ever tell you about these two lovely, young ADAs from Knoxville I met at a seminar at Northwestern?:D

Baba Louie - I never relealized L.V. had the registration law. Now I'm somewhat concerned. From your post, it appears this is a must do to transfer handguns. Looking at the link RobW posted, the 24 hours stipulation is as follows:

12.04.110 Registration of pistols within twenty-four hours. Any person receiving title to a pistol, whether by purchase, gift, or any other transfer, and whether from a dealer or from any other person, shall, within twenty-four hours of such receipt, personally appear at the county sheriff's office, together with the pistol, for the purpose of registering the same with the sheriff. It shall be the duty of the sheriff to register the pistol, and he may, and is hereby authorized to cooperate in any manner he sees fit with other law enforcement agencies, and with licensed dealers, relative to registration of pistols, so that efficient registration shall be secured at minimum cost and duplication.

How does this work with handguns a person already owns?

My wife has family in N. Vegas, and we've pretty well made up our minds to move there when we retire (nine years at the outside). The thought of hauling all my handguns down to the local P.D. the day after I move is almost comical.

What's the reality of the situation?

PlayTheAces,

Reality vs. the Law you mean?

If caught with an unregistered "concealable" firearm it will be confiscated, period. If you transfer thru an FFL, it will be registered, period.

I believe its a misdemeanor as it stands alone but could be used to augment any illegal activity you were up to, should that be your scene.

If you buy from a not-so-caring individual and he/she doesn't make you "register" it in your name, you now have a weapon, which may or may not be on the registery with the Sheriff/Metro's dept. in your possession.

Why would you want a gun that the Law doesn't know you own?

Are you planning something? (j/k)

If you never have a run-in with the law, so what.

If you keep a bunch of guns you got from grandpa at home and don't take them out regularly to play, who's to know?

If you plan on carrying something, it'd had better have a blue card associated with it in your name (or your dad's if you're a kid living at home and going to the range) just in case you're stopped by John Law.

I took the local Citizen's Police Academy years ago (91) and when I did the ride-along, the good officer I was with ran me on his SCOPE and lo and behold, thereupon came a list of "Every handgun I owned and had registered".

He said, "You must collect guns".

"Uh-huh".

"Probably have as many long guns as handguns too, right? I mean, they aren't on the list, but probably, right?"

"Maybe"

He smiled, "Yeah, Thought so."

But since I'm a do-gooder type, they'll never have to use that list, right? If any of my guns were stolen, they could then return them to me when they recover them (provided they weren't used in a crime), right?

My Dad hates that law. Any laws that pertain to firearms registration take a bit of freedom and privacy from us, so he says.

He's right.

But it's the law here in Clark County NV. Ain't gonna be repealed anytime soon. A trifling inconvenience so far.

Should I choose to sell them to Two-Blink when he moves to Reno, I could do so, (actually, anybody outside of Clark Co.) but I would tell him that these particular firearms are "registered" with the LVMPD in my name and that I hope he doesn't sell them to a bunch of crack-head dope dealers cause if they do turn up in a crime scene, I'll probably have the ATF and Metro knocking on my door as will the dealers from whom I bought them.

Not really good, not really evil, not even a pain in the rear. Keep the old family heirlooms tucked safely away.

Both Henderson and NLV have laws concerning carrying in car which are kinda bad if self defense is one of your concerns, but it's really a law to allow the Police to use against "Bad Boyz" (as if they're feeling selective in their enforcement). Like a lot of jurisdictions with their own crystallized prejudices, I get to make a choice. Break the law and protect myself from evil-doers and ner-do-wells, or be a potential victim.

Hmmm. Thats a tough one.

I oppose any and all forms for gun registration. But I have read many times on this board that Las Vegas is not gun friendly or that they have extremly restrictive gun laws and this certainly isn't the case. This gun registration law was on the books before I ever moved here 20 years ago. It only applies to handguns. When you buy a handgun, you fill out the regular yellow form just like you do everywhere else. Then there is an additional white form that is basically a shortened version of the yellow form. This doesn't result in any kind of additonal background check or anything. The one thing about it that might be a consideration is that if you have never registered a handgun in Clark County, then you have a waiting period. If you have previously registered a handgun in Clark County, you simply show any previous "blue card" and that is the end of it. When you go to take the handgun home, you are issued a "blue card" for that gun. If you are ever stopped and that handgun is discovered, you have to show the blue card. Again, I don't like it, but it is no big deal at all. The only time this would come into play is if you were stopped and the gun was discovered and at that point, they already know you have a gun because they are looking at it. And worrying about registering your guns is kind of a moot point considering you already filled out the yellow ATF form and also went through the background check. When I lived in Las Vegas, I didn't register any of my handguns that I didn't buy at a dealer. I didn't register the handguns that I had when I moved here or any of the ones that I bought from private parties. And, since I never did anything illegal when shooting my guns, I was never asked to show my blue cards. This law only applies in Clark County. If you buy a handgun anywhere else in the state, you won't get a blue card with it. It is up to you to register it in Clark County if you live there and if you don't, no one will ever know unless you get stopped by the police and they have reason to search your car or whatever. I now live in Nye County, which is about 50 miles from the Las Vegas metro area. I am not required to register my handguns. I buy guns all the time without registering them. I can take them to Las Vegas, carry them, shoot them in legal places and am under no obligation to register them.
In summary, I would hardly call a town where you can easily buy a machine gun or suppressor, a town that is unfriendly to gun owners. Nor would I call a town where they have shall-issue CCW a town unfriendly to gun owners. "They" (the government) are in the planning stages of a "World Class" shooting facility in the Las Vegas area as we speak. I am a member of the local Las Vegas shooting club (Desert Sportsman's) where they have monthly machine gun matches and are host to some of the premier action shooting matches in the country.

Reno is closer to Lassen College and in the summer time, it's NRA Gunsmithing. Reblue all your guns in one week for the cost of the course fee, motel & a bit of gas.

Baba Louie

Thanks for the response and insight. Interesting points to ponder. I firmly agree with your dad, but I do try my best to keep things legal.

The funny thing is I'm in L.A. County, and even though the perception is that this is gun owners purgatory, we have no requirement like this. The handguns I've purchased in the last fifteen years or so are all in databases, but those I picked up twenty five years ago aren't. In either case I'm within the law here.

On the other hand I can't even buy an AW, but you don't even register them?

Too many politicians making too many laws without any basis in logic!

But I want to live in a small town with big town access..

Then stick with northern NV. You can live in Carson City (~50,000) and be 25 minutes from downtown Reno. Or Reno itself if that is considered a "small town" to you. Winter is gloomy and a little cold, but the rest of the year is real nice. And plenty of mountains and open space near by. And of course... Hot August Nights!

444,

Informative post, now a question. If I go to Vegas for a visit do I need to register my handgun with Metro even though I am only there for a few days? I was there last year and I brought a handgun with me but I didn't carry it while in Vegas (only took it from the car to the hotel room safe). I might be going to Vegas this summer with some guys from work, we are LEOs so I am sure all of us will be packing since we are a parnoid bunch. No way am I driving from California to Vegas without a gun on me.

I liked my last trip to Vegas and I have been thinking of moving the family there when I retire, that is if I can make thirteen more years in this craphole state and job. I thought it was very nice country you guys have out there, I would like to live on the outside of Vegas.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

mrat,

I'm not trrying to steal 444's thunder here, but ONLY if you're a resident of Clark Co. are you required to...

Since 444 lives on the other side of the mountain in Nye Co. (in the paradise that's known as Pahrump :D , where, by the way, I'll be spending Easter with GF's family), AND since you Mr. mrat are also NOT a resident of Clark Co., you should be good to go just passing through, as it were.

It would be interesting to find out when and why that particular ordinance was passed. My guess would be in the 60's following the assasination years, but who knows?

Ahh... Kingdom of Nye, as Art Bell says.. :D

El T.. I am currently in Taiwan because I want to make my business work here. If I get it up and running and in good shape within a year or two, then I'm moving back. My business here in Taiwan should generate a decent living and so I can pick anywhere in America to live, without the worries of geography as it pretains to a job..

Also, I've worked as a computer consultant for a few years, and so I flew everywhere; so whereever there's a decent sized airport within 30 minutes drive, is good enough for me!

Also, no NO NO NO NO NO Las Angeles-esque traffic! I want big roads, cheap land, and good gun laws.. Fresh air and good food would just be icing on the cake..

Hmm..

I always thought you had to have proof of gun ownership on you when you enter Clark County, not just being a resident...??
