Replacement for LCR 9mm?

Winchester and DRT make training versions of their lower recoil self defense ammo. The training version is supposed to have the same low recoil feel as the self defense rounds but with a less expensive bullet.

Yeah, I have come across the DRT ammo in my searches and I didn't know what to think of it because I've never heard of them. What's their reputation?

I bought a few boxes of DRT training ammo a few months ago because it was on sale. It did have less recoil and didn't have any problems. Shooting ammo through a revolver greatly reduces the types of problems that would otherwise be possible in a semiauto pistol.

I doubt you will find any snub to be comfortable unless you go with a much heavier gun. I find glock 26 size guns to be easy to control and more accurate with less practice than snubs.

I'm definitely tempted to try the DRT ammunition. I wouldn't forsee any problems with it functioning in a revolver, of course; I was more worried about the fact that it's a frangible bullet, and the tests and opinions on it out there don't seem to be very good. I'd like to stick with tried and true brands, in plain old hollow points, if I can. That's why I'm wanting to stick with a Ruger firearm, after all.

That .327 is still sounding good to me, but here's the thing. .32 cal ammo is kind of rare, even online, and I hate to think of the idea of paying shipping. And there are only a handful of places locally where I can go look for ammunition, too, and I have a feeling that may be a goose chase. If I stick with 9mm. or even go to .38, there is a lot greater a chance of being able to go to a shelf in a local store and get it. I mean, are there really any places that sometimes offer free shipping on ammunition, or even cheaper flat rate shipping, other than maybe Sportsman's Guide?

EDIT: I was just looking at the muzzle velocities on .32 H&R magnum and .327 magnum and wow! Might as well be shooting .357 magnum, right?

I sometimes order ammo online. Even if the shipping is ten bucks (typically what i pay), it balances out with the sales tax savings if I order at least four boxes of ammo.
I've ordered from MidwayUSA, Selway Armory, and Ammo Supply Warehouse. If you get on an email list for internet vendors, you can also get alerts to some pretty good prices when they have special discounts and sales.

I have made up my mind I'm definitely not going with .327. Today my new grips for the LCR should arrive. If I get a chance to test them in the next couple of days, I'm going to take those results and decide whether or not to order the hammerless SP101 .357 magnum. My only concern with it is the trigger might not be that great. But I'm convinced I can at least put in a new mainspring. Not sure about the trigger return spring.

The sp101 trigger is not at all like the lcr. It will respond very well to trigger work and tuning however. If recoil reduction is your goal then it will satisfy. Look up Gemini custom to see what can be done with them. I think a double action only sp101 would make a fine carry gun and have considered sending ours of for customization. It's not a pressing matter with an lcr already in the mix. There are .38 special sp101s out the if you look hard enough.

I have an LCR 357 and spurless SP101 357, and the trigger on the LCR is IMO much, much better. As mentioned, the SP101 trigger can be improved, but still it does not compare well to the LCR. The SP is also much heavier, which makes it easier to shoot, but more difficult to carry (again, my experience only). Maybe you can try the 357 LCR with 38+p loads and see how that works...the slight weight increase of the 357 model makes a significant difference in recoil...it will be much easier to conceal/carry as well, compared to the SP.

Not sure where you are in illinois but I am an NRA instructor and would be happy to meet with you at a local range. I have helped many with grip issues, particularly with smaller pistols. I am in the north west burbs near Crystal lake. Let me know.

Baddad06 - Thanks so much for the offer. I'm much further south from where you are. And I really hope I never have to pay to go to a range. How does everyone afford it? I'll keep you in mind, but I'm sure there must be someone locally if I really do a search. For now I'm just going to keep working at it by myself. If it'll stop storming, and if I have time this week, I'll see what improvement the new grips have on the situation. Thanks again!

Okay, here's the update you've been waiting to hear! In between bouts of storms yesterday, I got to try the new Hogue grip, and suddenly this gun is SO shootable! I didn't expect this result, but the problem with my thumb is gone, and the general unpleasant reverberations have gone, too. After shooting 25 rounds of 115 gr., I decided to try some 124 gr., and they weren't bad, either. In fact, I shot about 130 rounds of them, and only stopped after I finally had a blister. Just wanted to push it as far as I could, as an experiment. And I was trying to work on my accuracy. I can see that's going to take a while, but I'm very pleased with the improvement in the whole scenario. Of course, I was sooo close to ordering that SP101 that I still want it, but we'll wait and see on that one. Thanks for your help, guys, there's nothing like good advice from people who know better than you.

With your LCR, have you ever had bullets creep forward from their cases, or ever have a bullet come out of the case (crimp jump) ?

Countzero, I haven't had either of those problems yet. I've expected it, but it hasn't happened. It is something to look out for. But I still have less than 500 rounds through this one, so we'll see.

That's good news indeed. Glad that you solved the problem without having to compromise on what you really wanted.

Kristie can you post the link to the Hogue grip you purchased?

I only see 2 grips for the LCR on Hogue's site - not 3.

Is this what you purchased, Ruger LCR No Finger Groove Rubber Tamer Cushion Grip:
