I have stated in a previous thread, that my experience with my existing sig 2022 has not been that great. Just a lousy trigger, from my perception. It is of the later 2022 design. I had an earlier model and I was happy with it, but alas a close friend of the family needed it more.
I have started looking around and have kind of narrowed my 40 caliber replacement to the Glock 23 compact or an M&P compact. Smaller grips appeal to my small hands.
Springfield has a compact as well, but not appealing to me. My preferred brand, CZ, has no current production 40s. My other favorite, Walther, don't think they offer anything new in a 40, but they do have a 40 PPS M1 which mimics my standard carry piece.
Any thoughts on my thinking process here? Not debating the 40 - I like to have a 40.Just don't like my current 40.

Just an FYI, for those with smaller hands (I'm one) the G23 and M&P Compact have a grip that is shorter top to bottom, but the trigger reach is the same as the G22/G35 and full size M&P. In the Glock line-up, the Gen 4 and Gen 5 guns have shorter trigger reach than the Gen 3 and earlier versions.

Here's a Rangemaster article from Tom Givens, who at the time was a .40S&W fan (I think he's now carrying a G17, but that's immaterial to this article) and his comments on the G22/G23/G35.

The M&P does have a very good reputation for handling the .40 S&W.

Beretta has the PX4 ( https://www.beretta.com/en-us/pisto...61.1755594864.1592573528-130766583.1585838773 ) if you'd like to stay with a hammer fired gun, and the APX ( https://www.beretta.com/en-us/apx-s...61.1755594864.1592573528-130766583.1585838773 ) if you'd like a striker fired gun, and the APX is particularly small hand friendly.

I really like my M&P 2.0 Compact. The ergonomics work for me but I do not have small hands. It does come with 4 different sized backstraps to accommodate different hand sizes. Maybe you should find one you can fondle & if possible rent & shoot before buying.

My preferred maker did make a P-09 in 40 up until 2018. I found one of those via Cabela's, but don't know if they will ship it to a store in Texas. It's in PA. I have handled the M&P CORE in 40 (checking with the dealer who had it and see if they still do - at least with him I could trade my 2022 to save some bucks) and liked it. I guess I should consider the Beretta again, but had two and disliked them but they were not their best products - cheetah and that little snap front-barrel .32. Probably dislike the cheetah so much because I gave up a far superior firearm a cz 2075 in trade for it :) Ranks as my worst trade ever.
Nice short read from rangemaster.

Unless they’ve dropped them recently Walther offers the PPQ, P99, and Creed in 40. I’m not sure if they’d fit what you’re looking for size wise as I’ve never owned either of them though. I have a classic M&P and M&P 2.0 in 40 and both are great guns. The 2.0 is easier to grip but the classics are usually cheaper.

I replaced my 2022 with an M&P full-size, then supplemented with a compact. Both have been great, even an improvement over the Sig.

I like my full-sized M&P a lot. Mine is 45acp, but my FiL has one in 40 caliber, and it is equally as good.

SAR makes an excellent CZ75 compact clone in 9mm, but I don't know if they have a 40 caliber version.

The only 40 caliber pistol I ever carry is a Kahr PM40. I don't like to carry anything that's large and obtrusive.

Hard call since the two I'd suggest (P07 and P-06 by CZ) are both discontinued.

Have you considered sending the 2022 into Bruce Gray for some trigger work? Not sure if he does that model but I have a relative who sent a 225-A1 in for some work and it came back really nice, not as expensive as a new gun either.

Unless you are OK with a plastic striker, then try a bunch and see which trigger you like best, probably a Walther or Sig 320 for smooth triggers (though I prefer Glock). Triggers are so subjective it's difficult to know what you consider good.

My preferred brand, CZ, has no current production 40s

That fact speaks for itself I had a CZ 75B Duotone in.40 that was a great looking CZ but never worked right for me at least

My other favorite, Walther,....

I’ve seen a few decent used Walther P99 AS examples in .40 S&W at great prices and the next one I see at the right price is coming home with me.

I have a S&W M2.0 compact in 40 that I love. It's a sweet shooter and the first gun I put in the range bag these days. It's the Goldilocks size and I prefer M&P ergos/grip angles over Glocks.

I would go Glock 23. That along with the 26 are probably the two best Glocks IMO. I too have small hands and the Glock 23 fits great. Also, I love the HK VP40. It fits my hands well however it is definitely larger than the Glock. I am just not a huge fan of anything S&W anymore, whether it is pistols, revolvers or AR's.

Another vote for a Glock 23, assuming it fits your hands. If you go Gen 4, the recoil is extremely soft (at least it was on my Gen 4 22). Shot 180g loads like a 9mm.

I have one, and it's very good...it used to be great until I got the P320 in 40S&W. Wow, what a great trigger, and overall a great platform. Wouldn't get rid of that P-09, though. I have the SP2022 in 9mm, I might get it in 40S&W some day, also a great and practical pistol.

As to your 2022, you could simply purchase the 40 barrel and a mag or two do that swap out.
I traded a glock for my 2022 - already had ample 45s and wanted a 40. I not a glock hater or anything. My local LGS with a decent variety told me they had an M&P or two plus a couple of G23s they would trade. Might be pretty close on the money with the glocks, probably not with the M&Ps, but it is a gun I keep fondling and then passing over. Might break that cycle - unless a Walther or a CZ shows up.

I'm pretty sure you can't put a .40 S&W barrel in a 9mm SP2022, or probably just about any 9mm.

You can usually put a 9mm barrel in a .40 S&W gun, but not usually go the other way.

understood. Knew I could change my 40 to a 9, just expected it to go both ways.

Coworker has offered me his cz 75 sp01 tactical for a reasonable price. I saw this one at the LGS before he bought it. I think it was the equivalent of New Old Stock since they quit making it a couple of years ago.

Purchased the SP01 this morning from my co-worker.
Hopefully this ends my need for a likable 40.

Maybe try an HK VP40 or a Sig P226, both handle the 40 very well. Forgot to mention the USP as well.
