Replacement........

US marines might be giving the old SAW m249 a boot and bringing in this bad boy. I first read a article on it in guns and ammo (I think dont qoute me) a few weeks ago and was impressed. The Ulimax 100 has alot of good atributes that the SAW doesnt have. i like the idea of mag fed vs. belt fed. Country of origin is Singapore

I think going to mag fed would be insane! You'd have two options, as stated in the review, either disposable cheaply made AR mags or the BETA drum. I really don't believe the BETA is combat worthy and fiddlin with constant mag changes seems like a bad idea.

Why replace it?

I carried the SAW (solid butt type) quite a bit in my time in service, and I was fairly impressed. The problems I noticed were weight, but the newer stock may have solved this; poky-things on every square-inch of the surface; and some of the parts were prone to breakage (barrel handle, trigger guard, nothing critical).

Just my experience.

i personally never liked belt fed operation, sure its great for certain applications, but imagine how much the troops are suffering cleaning the damn things in iraq to keep them operational. Its just not my first choice for all enviroment combat. It used to have an AR mag chute but they took it out because of relyiablity issues?!?!

I just don't believe that AR mags are tough enough for this job. Steel mags like HK makes possibly, but not flimsy aluminum mags. The BETA mag isn't even worth mentioning.
