Catherine Davis is the Republican candidate running against Hank Johnson. You may know this particular race since the (in)famous Cynthia Mckinney was the previous holder of this office. This district (GA 4th) is a historically democratic holdout (for the life of me, I don't know why). In November, we basically have two entirely new candidates for office. I sent Mrs. Davis an email asking her opinion on 2a and civil liberties in general. Here is her response. I also heard her on the local radio station just yesterday, and she stated how she was probably going to buy a gun as a result of a recent news story here about a man being held captive as his wife was raped in front of him. I emailed Mr. Johnson about the same issues (not just guns, I'm big on civil liberties), and have heard nothing in response.
Here is her email back to me.
I support the 2nd amendment and I guess I would be considered a strict constructionalist when it comes to the Constitution. I do not know enough about GA gun laws to comment on them, but some of my friends who are NRA members were surprised at how lax the law is here in that there is no requirement to even learn how to use a gun properly before you are licensed to carry one.
I am currently exploring the purchase of a gun and have sought their counsel and when I asked them about the state's requirement for me to take a class I was surprised that there is none. There is not even a recommended list of where I can go to find a top notch class to learn how to shoot. So if I were at the state level or asked to comment, I would probably look toward the state requiring some classes or something for novices like me. I certainly don't want to shoot my own foot off!
In terms of assault rifles, I often ask these same friends why anyone would need one but I am not willing, at this time to recommend any restrictions for the sake of having them. I don't know of any evidence that waiting periods make a difference since it does not seem to the be the law abiding citizens who are using these guns to kill people. It is those who are doing it illegally as I understand it and a waiting period is not stopping them.
I hope that helps you understand where I am on the gun issue and I would apprecaite your support to be the next Congresswoman from GA. Thanks you for taking the time to contact me and if there are other questions I can answer for you, please feel free to let me knmow.
Catherine
I'm not saying I agree with 'everything' she says... but for the most part, I do. This is a unique situation as there is no incumbent. The election is only a few months away and I'm thinking there "may" be a chance we might get a good guy(woman) in here. Coincidentally, I've volunteered for her campaign weeks ago with no response. She sounded optimistic when being interviewed on the radio. A GOP win here would be CRAZY... this is a district with over half a million people! It can happen!
Just wanted to mention it.
