What do I need to do, if anything, to prepare this for removal? What do I need to use to unscrew it? Any old pair of pliers? Can I assume that the rule is still "righty-tighty," "lefty-loosey"? I'm thinking of either replacing it with a tritium bead, or going whole hog and putting an MMC rifle-type sight on the front and a ghost ring on the rear.

If you don't want to save the bead, any pair of pliers will do, just make sure you don't scratch the barrel. You might try using some label paper to prevent that; just punch a hole in it and put it over the bead to keep the pliers away from the barrel.

If you want to save the bead, you can try taping the pliers with adhesive tape, but you still could score or crush it.

Use a pen vise. Get the right size from a industrial supply store and it will install and take out small round items with out a mark. :)

That is what a gunsmith would use, of course, but I saw no reason for Takhtakaal to buy a special tool for a one-time use.

Replacing Ithaca M37 Bead

If the bead is a original factory bead, it is threaded in. Turn left to loosen.
Be aware that Ithaca used a different thread size then most other US gun manufactures. The last one I replaced, I had to get it from Brownells.
