Replacing/upgrading nightstand pistol

You could just use the Shield for nightstand duty in addition to EDC. Alternatively, how about an optics-ready Shield Plus?

Here’s an even better price on a CZ P09…

Thanks for the options. This helps since there are a few things I forget about. The Cz P series has a lot of what I’m thinking. I also seem to overlook the SIGs as well.
The M&P 40 police trade ins also reminded me of the “guns you wish you had bought“ thread. I should have gotten Atlanta PD trade in 12 years ago

"Logical mind" says striker-fired?

Why?

In a home-defense scenario, a DA/SA with a heavy DA first pull might be the best option -- in terms of threat management (if you have to hold someone at gunpoint, which might be more likely than having to shoot someone) and also in terms of lessening chances of a negligent discharge (trust me, Rule 3 is hard to observe when the adrenaline's pumping and there's a likelihood of being startled). And why have a budget for an under $600 gun to defend your life and the lives of your family?

And totally disagree with wanting to use a compact handgun for a home-defense role.

My take is, should be a full-sized pistol. Should have a WML (gives you a free hand for a cell phone or to open doors). Should absolutely have decent night sights.

I surely don't get that one. The one gun you should splurge on is the one that protects home and hearth (and family) -- and that should be a handgun you have great familiarity with and shoot better than all others.

But, if you're really that cheap, a Glock 19, S&W M&P-9, used Beretta 92 or SIG P-226, maybe.

My choices: 15+1 in .45 ACP FNX-45 (Streamlight light/laser combo) and a 20+1 9mm SIG P-226 Legion (SureFire X-300 Ultra).

Again, this is all purely subjective, and I'm certain many would disagree with my thoughts.

A lot of wisdom in this post.

Heck of a deal. Have you or anyone purchased firearms from Battlehawk Armory?
Here’s an even better price on a CZ P09…

I think we’re getting some convergence here. I like the features of the CZ P01/07/09 models. Now it’s a question of getting hands on one to see how they feel in hand.

The P-09 was sold out at Battlehawk. Found a great deal at GunStuff TV for the CZ P-07. Went with that. I have them both; can't go wrong with either.

The cz p-09 is my choice for bed side gun. Holds a lot of ammo and holds a light. If I want a heavier caliber I use my cz 97. Just have to use a hand held light. IMG_20230507_114303_HDR.jpg IMG_20231001_174401_HDR~2.jpg

I'm also in the p07 camp but I may replace it with a cz a01 ld after I determine how reliable it is. 19+1 with the added ability to blungeon anyone and anything to death. I'll have to decide if a separate flashlight is doable.

I was going to suggest the P09 deal. Probably not any help but I got to shoot a friends P07 yesterday. Nice pistol.

So as an update, I found a lightly used Cz P-09 locally. I haven’t gotten it out to the range yet, but it’s got a good feel to it. The giant size suits my hands well. Now to figure out what ammo it likes best and get used to shooting it. I suppose it’s a box per magazine with a lot of hollow points.

I'm not a fan of striker fired gun, they shoot fine and are fun, but I feel they are not sufficiently safe.

My bedside gun is either an H&K P30SK or an S&W 38 Special J-frame machined to accept moon clips.

I have both the SA/DA (V3 trigger), P30SK and the LEM trigger version to choose from.

Currently, my J-frame of choice is a Model 638 but I others to choose from.

If you want simplicity Ithink I'd stay with 9mm. I say this mostly because that is what I did :)

SInce you carry a Shield why not get an M&P for the night stand ? Maybe a newer Shield Plus ? Lots of good options have been suggested here. If you could find an old Ruger SR9c or SR9 they are a fine option. They seem scarce on the used market and are not made any more. Most people who have one do not want to get rid of them.

My night stand gun is a XD mod 2 in .45acp. With the standard extended magazine (shown below) it holds 14 but if you are worried there is a 25 round extended magazine available.

I like being able to slip it into a jacket pocket with the 9 round magazine for taking the garbage out.

At the risk of stating the obvious…if you can try some of the great recommendations above to see what feels/shoots best for you it will help make best choice. My bedside is a sig 320 with a streamlight light on it. Point of aim is right in the middle of the light pattern as it should be. I’ve got several CZ’s and would +1 on the P07 as well. I carry sig 365 and love it but agree with you…bedsides should have more rounds (God forbid) just in case.
And remember to take it to the range from time to time. I like to go late on cloudy days so I can see the light on target at 10-15 feet. THEN do a few drills.
Let us know what you choose. Good luck,
KCAce

Just a heads up, but P10 F mags are now the same as the P09.
My original and now spare slide wears iron sights by CZ custom, fiber front with the HTAC rear. CZ custom sights are IMO superior to any oem sight.

I went with a SIG P229 E2 with the SRT and added a light/laser combo to it. I also had a CZ P01 and P07 (all three pistols can be used in DA /SA mode), that could also fulfill the job of providing home defense and concealed carry.

CZ P10C .. can be found under $350
Hard to imagine a better pistol for the money
+2 mags easily found
