Rep. Thaddeus G. McCotter said:
Dear Mr. Reitzel

Thank you for informing me of your opposition to the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022). Your thoughts on this important matter are most welcome and appreciated.

I agree with you

As you know, on September 13, 1994, Congress placed a 10 year ban on the possession, transfer, or further domestic manufacture of semiautomatic assault weapons (SAWs). Since this ban expired on September 13, 2004, multiple attempts have been made in both the 108th and 109th sessions of Congress to extend or permanently impose the ban. Opponents of doing so, including myself, believe responsible gun owners must not be punished for the wrongdoing of criminals; thus, Congress needs to stop targeting hunters, responsible gun-owners, and gun manufacturers, and focus on the real problem: repeat offenders illegally obtaining firearms.

Nevertheless, Representative Carolyn McCarthy (NY) introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022) on February 13, 2007. If enacted, this legislation would reinstate for ten years the expired prohibitions regarding assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices. Furthermore, H.R. 1022 would also prohibit the transfer of semiautomatic weapons, except through a licensed dealer or a State or local law enforcement agency. Presently, H.R. 1022 awaits in the House Judiciary Committee.

In the meantime, rest assured, your opposition to the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022) will be kept firmly in mind during the 110th Congress. Again, thank you for contacting me; and for all you do for our community and our country. Should you have any further comment or question on this or any other issue, please contact me at the Livonia district, or Washington D.C. office.

I work for you.

The emphasis was in his original letter.

Somewhat of a form letter, but at least he gets it. He's a good rep, and I will definitely continue voting for him. :)

Don't get concerned about the form letter...

Representatives get a fair amount of mail. To answer every one is just about impossible.

At least his reply said he agreed with you.

My suspicious side wonders if he sends out a form letter that agrees with those in favor of that stinking ban.

I doubt it. When I send letters to our anti-gun senators and my anti-gun congressb.....sorry, congressperson, they thank you for your concern and then dance around the topic, laying it on so thick you forget what you wrote them about. Which, of course, is exactly what they want.

Here's the reply I got from Rep Lewis..

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to H.R. 1022, the Assault Weapons Ban
and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007. I share many of your concerns.

As you know, H.R. 1022 would reinstate for ten years the assault
weapons ban. It would also expand the definition of an assault
weapon to include conversion kits and any semiautomatic rifle
or pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and
that has specified characteristics, including a telescoping stock.

The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
While I do not serve on that committee, as a strong
defender of second amendment rights I will be certain to
monitor the committee's actions carefully and will keep your
comments in mind when the bill reaches the floor of the
House for a vote.

Again, thanks for continuing to communicate your priorities. Please
do not hesitate to contact me in the future on this or any other issue
of concern to you.

Sincerely,

Jerry Lewis
Member of Congress

I agree wholeheartedly. They all need to remember who they work for, though I don't think many of them do.

Awesome letter, all around. He sounds like another good friend up there.

I doubt it, Rep. McCotter is the real deal as far as I can tell. Although, I would like to see how he responds to the anti's that write to him about issues like this.

Yeah, that's the kind of song and dance I get from Levin whenever I write him.

I still remember that "I'm from Clare and pro-hunting" BS letter from Debbie Stab-me-now.

She's never replied to me at all. I'm sure she disagrees with my positions though, due to her voting record.

The closing line of Rep. McCotter's letter makes me like him. Even if he is a politician.

Yeah, I really like that line myself. :)

I hear ya! I wish we could get Mr. Conyers out of D.C., and out of the judiciary committee chair as well.

Oh, and Welcome to THR :) It's a great forum, filled with knowledgeable folks :)
