Below is a response to the recent comments I received from you:

Dear Mr. Ron8903: (omitted real name)

Thank you for contacting me regarding the semiautomatic weapons ban. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to respond to your concerns.

When our Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution, they included the Second Amendment to guarantee people the right to keep and bear arms. This is a fundamental part of our American identity, and I will work with my Senate colleagues to ensure that this liberty is protected for all law-abiding citizens.

On February 13, 2007, Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022). This legislation would reauthorize for ten years the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, which prohibits the manufacture, transfer, or possession of a semiautomatic assault weapon or a large capacity ammunition feeding device. H.R. 1022 has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, where it awaits further approval.

Although no similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind as we proceed in the 110th Congress.

Again, thank you for sharing your views with me. If you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition, for more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

Mel Martinez
United States Senator

My kind of guy.

I see a carefully worded message that really says nothing, and allows the Senator to jump either way on the issue. While he says that he supports the 2nd. Amendment, he doesn't make it clear that in his view that support includes the right to own military look-alike guns with large capacity magazines. He may subscribe to the anti-gunner's position concerning "sporting purpose." I'd watch and see what way he goes. :uhoh:

Agreed. It almost looks like a canned-answer that is totally without comitment. Thank-you for taking the time to put the post up and for sharing it with us.

Martinez is on OUR SIDE.

Geez......................

In no way does he support HR 1022 or similar bills that have been introduced before.

:)

Its a very positive response. No reason at all to read a hidden communist agenda into it.

Despite Martinez being labled a (R) he is a rino/neo-con of the highest order. He is pro-illegal alien/amnesty, he is for "sensible" gun laws, etc.

Maybe, but the letter doesn't clearly say that.

And then...

Despite Martinez being labled a (R) he is a rino/neo-con of the highest order. He is pro-illegal alien/amnesty, he is for "sensible" gun laws, etc.

So how is one supposed to know? The letter could have said something like: "If this legislation or anything like it is introduced in the Senate I will oppose it."

But the letter didn't. :uhoh:  :scrutiny:

I agree... he's riding the fence.

"law-abiding" could mean only folks who abide by the McCarthy proposed bill. He didn't state that RKBA deliberately includes semiautomatic weapons suitable for self defense.

He needs to be prodded further, IMO.

I agree, Justin. I just sent the man a letter, even paid to have it hand delivered, which is more than likely a waist of my time and money, but I will continue to bug the good Senator on HR1022. Has anyone else noticed they've added to the title of the bill, "Police Protection Act?"

I'm not going to argue after I posted where he stands.

If you want to believe in your own mind Martinez supports this bill, wait for him to introduce the senate companion version.

Then why doesn't he just say in his reply to the OP's query that he doesn't support a renewal of the AWB?

On what do you base your opinion that "In no way does he support HR 1022 or similar bills that have been introduced before."

How can anyone trust a politician that will not answer a simple question with anything other than waffling?

For those of you who feel that Sen. Martinez disapproves of HR 1022, or any other form of AWB, would you please point out exactly where in the letter he specifically states that? Thank you.

Never trust a politician who doesn't come right out and attack the Second Amendment. They're even worse when they don't support anti gun bills. It's the worst kind of political trickery. I wouldn't vote for any of them.

None of the political parties are any good either. Every single one of them advocates something I don't like. Not one of them advocates everything I like. They are all worthless and untrustworthy.

I agree that Martinez is trying to weasle his way through this one.

On a good note I received a response from my representative (Virgil Goode - Virginia 5th District), and he said that he doesn't support HR 1022 or any other legislation that infringes on American's 2nd amendment rights.

Maybe I should send Goode's letter to Martinez so he can see how easy it is to be honest!
