Hey all,

This is an exchange between my state senator and myself regarding current legislation in our house. I was dumbfounded as it seemed he responded himself and even more dumbfounded when he answered my final question. Read on!

Subject: Gun Control and House Bill 48
March 17, 2009
The Honorable Tim Bivins
Illinois Senate
Illinois State Senate
Springfield, IL 62706
Senator Bivins:

Dear Sirs,
HB 48 is unjustified and an inappropriate waste of our (taxpayers) money.
Please reject this bill.
Sincerely,

Peter Bray

Response

Peter,

I will oppose the bill if it comes to the Senate.
Thanks for contacting me.

Tim Bivins
State Senator
45th District

Response

Mr. Bivins,

Thank you for the response. Not surprisingly you were the only one to respond.

Does it help when I contact a elected official when my request is opposite their parties platform? Does this influence their decisions?

Sincerely,

Response

Pete,

When an elected official gets flooded with emails, calls etc it does have an
impact. A recent survey showed that it only takes 23 people to change a
legislators mind or get them to reconsider a position. The complaints of
6-12 people got the Illinois High School Association to change a rule that
impacts the entire state. So the answer is yes keep making those contacts
and encourage others to do the same.
Thanks for contacting me.

Tim Bivins
State Senator
45th District

There you go! I guess we can make a difference.... I know I will be writing more often now to my senators both at the state level and nationally!

i'd say it's in the right forum.

Good for you on contacting your senator on an issue. I actually just sent letters to some congresscritters myself regarding the DoD spent brass surplus issue. first time in activism for me.

Right forum, and good work.

It is important to write to the opposition... only writing to the guys that agree with you is like preaching to the choir. Keep it thoughtful, respectful, and professional (as you did) and it will make an impact.
