Report: Confusion played part in Iraq ambush, capture involving Lynch

In my opinion, you shouldn't have to clean a battle rifle as much as the M-16 requires. You just shouldn't have to spend more time cleaning than you do firing. Maybe we DO need a new battle rifle.

I'm no Monday quarteback but...
If there were 18 vehicles and 33 soldiers, how come Pfc.Lynch was in a humvee with 3 other soldiers? Why weren't the soldiers broken up in as many vehicles as possible? It would seem to me to offer better protection/backup driver.
And yes,it sure seems that an awful lot of equipment jammed/failed.

QuickDraw

Many errors but Captain King (Unit Commander) seems to be inept. Can't read a map; can't follow a route; doubles back through an ambush; doesn't require his NCO's to check weapons. Soldiers have a right to competent leadership. King ain't it.

Based on WHAT, exactly? So far almost everthing about the story reported in the media was wrong.

Here is a hint for the comfy chair critic set: navigating in a trackless desert without a GPS is a nightmare. That's why it's called a "trackless desert," and not, "a friendly place with lots of handy landmarks."

Actually, the problem was not not having a GPS, but not having a map. Also, yes they were ambushed on a road. The MSR north from Kuwait starts off through the desert (where they actually were tracks to follow) and then transfers onto hardball a bit before An Nasiriyah.

I love the internet... how did the Army ever get by without you "experts" embedded behind your PCs to keep them straight?

Well, Smith, I only base my "expert" opinion based on the fact that I travelled up the same MSR during the war and saw the burned out vehicles where the 507th was ambushed. Don't take my word for it though.

Well Smith since you asked, the Army did not do without me. I retired from the Army with over 20 years service. Got a lot of experience when wearing the uniform.
