I would appreciate some feedback from gun folks on this issue.Tonight I attended my agencies Deputies Association meeting, where one of the topics covered was the current state of fund-raising efforts for and by the Association.

I suggested the possibility of offering a raffle for a firearm, having in mind the recent successful raffle by a Chicago-area Police organization of an AR15.I mentioned that raffle, the success it was by the organization and how sales of tickets for these sorts of things seem to spread by word of mouth over the internet.I know I certainly have bought MY share of tickets for these sorts of raffles when they get posted on the net. The AR was actually what I had in mind myself as a weapon to be raffled off, since so many people who DO shoot have some experience with the AR family.

In discussing the possibility of doing a raffle and what weapon(s) to offer in the raffle, the sentiment by most of the officers present was that due to our very liberal county, raffling an AR would not be politically wise on the Associations part. In trying to come up with some sort of politically correct alternative, I suggested that since we ARE the home of Ithaca Gun that we offer up an Ithaca shotgun; Ithaca currently has several limited edition versions out for sale or in the production pipeline, from my most recent conversations with one of their sales guys last week. We would probably try to offer one of the limited edition guns rather than a plain jane Model 37. The deputies seemed to favor this idea, and also suggested that we offer some sort of multi-gun raffle with other options besides the Ithaca..one of those raffles with "30 guns over 30 days " types of raffles.

My personal feeling is that when it comes to these gun raffles on the net that the more popular raffles ARE the military pattern rifles.....the ARs, etc. Apparently I am outvoted on this issue though. So here is MY question, or questions, to you guys: WOULD you guys, or a decent cross section of you guys, still support a raffle even though it offered a rather mundane product like the Ithaca shotgun? I know that many shotguns get raffled off in local venues, but this is something I would hope would get a wider audience. Secondly, if you guys had your choices of other long guns you would like to see in a multi-gun raffle, what sorts of weapons would interest you enough to support the raffle financially ( NOT including weapons valued in the multi-thousands of dollars..keep it reasonable here ) ? Keep in mind that the military pattern rifles are apparently off limits in making the choices . BY virtue of me speaking up on the idea, it is now my assignment to run with this thing and come up with ideas to make a full presentation at the next meeting.

Thanks for your feedback.

If I'm not familiar with or associated with the org that's doing the raffle, I limit my support to guns that I want. Personally, the Ithica shotgun doesn't appeal to me right now. Everyone could always use another AR. :D

Some Ideas

If you are concerned with "politically correct" :barf: stick to hunting rifles and shot guns. And stick to "purty" ones because women will buy tickets for their hubbies, boyfriends, etc. Invariably you sell lots of tickets to women who are buying them for their men (or so they say).

My BP group raffles a BP rilfe and pistol every year, and does pretty well. BP hunting is picking up in alot of places, so a good inline or even traditional wouldn't be a bad thing to think about (and I can't see much in the way of pc problems with BP).

Good Luck!

Maybe a nice lever action rifle as an alternative? Maybe offer a choice of 3 rifles in the same price range that the winner gets their choice of?

Relatively speaking, I think shotguns do play to a smaller audience, tho that said ... there are still many who'd welcome winning one!

If my club raffle last time is anything to go by (and others too) ... halfways decent hunting rifles usually do quite well. I was lucky enough to win a Savage 99C in .243 in a raffle two years ago .... and was well pleased.

Other examples, without costs getting too out of hand might be Ruger M77 ... Rem 700 .... that sorta stuff. Maybe something in a belted magnum ... 7mm mag for instance.

You can always add ''spice'' by offering a scope to go with any rifle on offer .. maybe too have smaller prizes such as Harris bipods.

Just thinking out loud!:)

Well, how about the Ithaca, and then to balance out the shotgun factor, ya auction off (since they dont' an AR.... ;) ) an AK and a FAL. Yeah, that's the ticket.
