Can you recommend tools I'll need to drift out the existing sights and install the new ones?

Can you recommend some sights? This will be a range gun. I'm thinking maybe a fine fiber optic up front and either plain or different color fiber optics in the rear.

Currently, its rear sight is a shallow V, and the front is a big white dot. I guess supposed to be quick acquisition, but not really what I want to get tight groups.

Thanks!

A good sight pusher is not a necessity but makes the job easier and mitigates the possibility of damaging the slide. A heavy padded vise, a non-marring punch (brass, nylon, or aluminum) and a 8 oz or heavier hammer will usually move the old sights.
For replacement sights, take a look at Dawson Precision for a big variety of choices.

I prefer an old canvas shot bag full to max with sand over a vise for punching pins and sights, if possible.

Use a brass punch, NOT steel. I only use copper or plastic hammers on my gun bench.

Most sights are slightly tapered. Meaning they only come out from one side. If it isnt budging, try from the other side.

A copy and post from a thread on another forum. Bold and underlined are my emphasis.

<quote> Fellows, I posted the story of the sight dovetails on another similar thread, and would not normally double post a comment, but I feel it would be in everyone's best interest if I did. So for everyone's information, here are selected exerpts from the other thread explaining the story of the CDHP's sights.

"KBI (Kassnar Imports) had FEG make the guns and then send them to the USA for final assembly and fitting. The first 500 guns were finished by the Dan Wesson concern, had an "HP" prefix to their serial numbers, and had dovetail slots set up for Novak Sights for the Browning Hi Power.

The remainder of the production run was finished by Magnum Research, had an "HPM" prefix to the serial numbers, and had slots set up for Novak Sights for the 1911 instead of for the BHP. I had one of these guns and the slots were indeed made to 1911 dimensions.

You can read the entire post in reply #46 at: http://www.handgunsandammunition.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=8478&start=15#88237 <end quote>

So it appears that Novak's will work. Just need to pick the correct ones based on the above. There are various manufacturers of Novak clone sights, not all of which are made the the same exact dimensions. If yours has the HPM prefix serial number and 1911 dimension Novaks the you might also look at Heinie sights. Heinie offers a version of his sights that fits a Novak Dovetail. Those are not the original dovetail style for Heinies, so make sure you're looking at the right ones.

Jim, Bill: Thanks a lot!

I'll look at my gun's serial # later and follow up with what I decide to do.
