Hey everyone.

I am buying a gun this week from summitgunbroker. I am ready to pay, but since we just moved to TN, none of us have a TN drivers license, although we do have them from our old state (Kansas).

I was wondering what is required when buying a gun in TN, and would not having a license prevent us from doing so?

Thanks!

i think there are other forms of identification than can be used as proof that you're a resident, as obviously, not all residents have drivers licenses.

however, if you're new, you're not going to have any of those other either, so path of least resistance is definitely to get your license.

Save yourself a lot of hassle. Get your TN drivers license. If you don't have your license, there is a very good chance that you will be rejected or at least very delayed during the background check. You moved to TN, so get the license as you are required to anyway within 30-days if you follow the letter of the law. This is pretty much true of all states.

during the background check

Really? Since when? When I was there (seven years ago) all I had to do was get the local sheriff to approve my handgun purchase.

Is this with all guns or just handguns?

During a recent handgun purchase where Form 4473 was completed, I was told by the dealer that the background check would not go as smoothly without the drivers license number and social security number. They check both during the instant check. I believe that it is probably the No. 1 way that they can distinguish between J Smith and John Smith and so forth. They take thumb prints also, but what they are used for I have no idea? I think the dealer keeps them. The check is done by the Sheriff's Department.

I believe that 7-years ago, there was a 7-day waiting period in place in TN. Don't remember when the 7-day ended and instant check started. At shows, the only way to get the background check done quickly was to go through the sheriff's department and many shows had folks there to handle this for a fee.
