I load for 2-223 bolt actions and screwed up last night. I loaded about 30rds and checked all the cases in the Lyman case checker and made a dummy round and colored the bullet and the chamber was hard to close but no marks on the bullet and it dawned on me. The die was set up to move the shoulder on the other rifle not the one I wanted to load for. Can I take out the de capping rod and sizer button or move it higher to not lose 30 primers?

Yea I've done this before when I first started messing with the Ackley shoulder cases. Just remove the pin and size as normal.

Yes you can, I have done the same thing before and my solution was to eliminate the issue

I load for two .223's, a Ruger bolt and a Mini 14. I use a LCT so i just simplified things and bought another turret/dies/powder measure, one set for the bolt gun and the other for the semi-auto. I do the same thing for my two 30-30's, one bolt gun and the other a lever-gun. I did the same for .38spcl and .357mag, both have dedicated turrets.

That is a prime reason to own a set of dies for each gun that requires me to make changes to my dies each time I use them ... heck I got three sets of .44 Rem Mag dies that are set for different guns ... once set I never move them ...

By looking on some of the Facebook reloading groups .... it is not uncommon to find a good set for half price a new set .... that is also a good source for brass and bullets along with other reloading tools ....

You can remove the decapping pin leaving the expander button. The LEE Universal decapping die is an inexpensive but handy die to own. It decaps and does not size.:)

Get your self a set of shims and use them to set the longer one. Then when you need to shorten it just remove the shims. I do this of several sets of dies. The shim pack I got were from Amazon and were only $7 at the time. You can also use them to fine tune a die if needed.

I have the Redding S Body die so I can actually resize a loaded round if needed.

I accidently removed the collet nut on a Lee 9mm sizing die. So now the nut will not go back in. Instead of sending to lee for them to fix I dedicated this die for 9mm sizing when I want to keep the primer intact. Have used it several times for this purpose.

I use a Lee Universal DecappingDie for every case I reload. I can never seem to actually remove the decapping pin from my sizing dies so a cut off wheel on a Dremel works to cut it off. Never have to worry about sizing with a primer in the case.

You still need the mandrel to size the neck. Are these in a bolt rifle? If so as long as the bolt closed you can size them in your chamber.

yes was for a bolt gun. I would have to Hercules the bolt closed. haha.

I was more worried about breaking the decapping rod or pin so what I did was screwed the rod out as far as I could and then just barely screwed in the black but on the rcbs die that holds the rod and sized the neck and pushed the shoulder back. all worked out well.

I believe in the RCBS you can unscrew the pin off the end of the mandrel. That is one thing I miss when I changed all my dies over to Lee.

Glad you got it.

2 cans of surplus Russ. 7.62X54R (880 rounds )
powder charge varied widely ( so did the point of impact )
cut the decaping pin off of the Lee Die and redid all 880 rounds
when I got done its good stuff

I just ordered a new decap/expander rod

With a body die you can resize a case with primer in place; in fact you can resize a loaded case with bullet in place.
