I contacted via email both Ohio Senators, Sherrod Brown and George Voinovich about H.R. 297 and my displeasure with it. Specifically I suggested we should perhaps fully enforce the laws that are already on the books. Here's what Sherrod Brown emailed back to me:

Thank you for expressing your concerns about H.R. 297, the NICS Improvement Act.

H.R. 297 aims to help separate law-abiding gun owners from criminals. It would address shortcomings in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in a number of ways. It would provide funding incentives to states to automate and share information with the FBI on those individuals barred by federal law from purchasing firearms. Because of the discrepancies in records kept by states, millions of records of these individuals are not part of the NICS system. This legislation would significantly improve this situation.

This legislation, which was drafted in consultation with the National Rifle Association, was passed by unanimous voice vote on June 13, 2007. This bill has not yet been introduced in the Senate. Should the bill be introduced, I will keep your views in mind. Thank you again for contacting me.

Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown

I like how he points out how it was drafted "in consultation with the National Rifle Association" and was passed by "unanimous voice vote" (didn't Ron Paul vote 'NO'???). So basically, I'm supposed to be pleased because the NRA had a hand in it and it was "unanimous."

Wow, I guess that solves everything!

Even though I disagree with Brown, at least he (or a staffer) took the time to contact me. Can't say the same for George RINO-vich. I've never gotten a response from RINO-vich's office in regards to anything I've ever sent to him via his website, so I don't expect to get a response about this.

So which is worse, getting a bad response or no response at all? Either way, it seems people who care about upholding the 2nd Amendment are getting flipped the bird, not only by Congress but by the NRA. :banghead:

I got a reply from Brown after the VT shootings...it was full of all the warm fuzziness that we would expect...
Thank you for contacting me in regard to gun control.

The recent tragedy at Virginia Tech is shocking and deeply saddening. My condolences go out to the victims of this senseless act of violence and their families and friends.

While I do not support an outright ban on guns or restricting the use of sporting weapons for hunting by law-abiding citizens, the massacre in Virginia illustrates all too well the need for common sense gun control laws. In the past I have supported the assault weapons ban and the five-day waiting period for the purchase of handguns, both widely supported by the law enforcement community. Better enforcement of existing laws might have prevented this tragedy, but a reexamination of current gun control laws may be warranted nonetheless.

Gun owners and gun safety advocates can and should work together to reduce gun violence without compromising the second amendment or privacy rights of law-abiding Americans. If a relevant bill comes before the Senate, I will keep your thoughts on gun control in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me.

Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown

Like you, I've NEVER received any response from Voinovich....and I have very little hope of ever receiving any support from either of them.

I'm trying to be as non-partisan as I can be of late, but yeah, Brown appears to be a fellow-traveler of the Teddy, Chuck and Hillary show. Paraphrased, his response seems like one of the typical lines of "dookie" from anti-gunners.

"I don't want to ban ALL guns."

"Guns for HUNTING by law-abiding citizens are OK."
