A couple looking to get a little relaxation almost got robbed at gunpoint.

It happened at a rest stop in Laurens County Wednesday afternoon.

Captain Grady Toney with the Laurens County Sheriff's Office says a man and his wife made a routine stop at a rest area off Interstate 16 in Laurens County. But instead of getting rest, they almost got robbed.

Toney says it happened around two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Rest Area 88 off I-16 West.
Toney says as the man and his wife pulled up into the rest area, they saw a man sitting on a bench.
The husband got out of the car; the suspect approached him, pulled a gun and demanded his wallet.
Captain Toney says the traveler turned out to be a military general just returning home from Iraq and instead of handing over his wallet, he flashed his military credentials instead. Toney says the suspect saw it and ran off. :what:
While the couple in this case escaped theft and injury, Captain Toney issues a warning to all travelers.

CAPTAIN GRADY TONEY, LAURENS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
"People that are traveling during this time of the year, just be careful when you stop at rest areas or places and all. Most of them try to be secure, some of them have security officers there. Just always be observant of your surroundings, what's going on."

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office and State Patrol called in a full ground search with dogs and a helicopter, but the trail went cold.
Captain Toney says the suspect was last seen around the rest stop area. Toney says there's a chance this suspect could be linked to another incident that occurred in East Dublin Tuesday night.

The suspect is described as a white man, five feet ten inches tall with extremely close cut blonde hair. Toney says from a distance, the suspect almost looks bald. He has multi-colored tattoos from his mid forearm to his shoulder. The suspect was last seen wearing a white tank top and dark brown or tan pants.

If you have any information contact the Laurens County Sheriff's Office at 478-272-1522.

So, let me see if I have this straight. I pull in at a rest stop and I gotta pee baaaaaaad. I see a person sitting on a bench. I pull out an empty 7-11 cup and filler up with urine. I crack my window and pour out the liquid, saving the cup for the next rest stop. And then I drive away.

I'll bet the BG thought those credentials were the badge of an undercover cop or something.

I have a friend, who is an idiot, and against my opinion bought himself one of those Concealed Handgun License badges that looks like a cop badge. He was showing it to a guy and someone else saw it and turned him for inpersonating a LEO. Man did that get nasty before it got cleared up!!!

I seem to recall that another American general of Iraqi War fame was robbed at a rest stop on I-95 in Maryland. Middle of the day and pretty crowded, too.

Now if I were SECDEF, I would order all officers to carry 24/7 in the performance of their military duties. (Maybe it would bring down the crime rate in D.C.?)

BigMike:

Does (or did) your buddy also own one of those hats/t-shirts or both with the "Concealed Carry Permit Holder" on it ? ? ?

he flashed his military credentials instead.
What are "military credentials", anyway?

I've spent the last 21 years in the military, and they never told me that I could have "credentials". ;)

I suppose it sounds better than "he flashed an ID card".

Are they still issuing Army GO's chopped and channeled .45s? If so, wonder where his was?

lpl/nc ('course, if he has BG-repelling papers, i guess he doesn't need it...)

That, my friends, is why I had six rounds of .357 magnum on my hip during my recent road trip to the grand canyon.

What would six rounds of .357magnum on your hip do for you when a guy is standing in front of you holding a gun at the ready??

General's are no longer issued custom .45's. INstead, they get a tricked-out version of the Beretta 92. Combat Handguns did an article on it not too long ago. Custom grips, leather version of the Bianchi holster system. Name engraving, etc.

being PC in the military

"Now if I were SECDEF, I would order all officers to carry 24/7 in the performance of their military duties."

Yeah, well that's the rules: that anyone over the rank of E-7 can carry any time they wish. But of course, bowing to the p***ies that run the show now, they leave it up to your commander- who never supports it. i dont know one who does anyway.

In Georgia, as unjust as it is, concealed carry even by permit holders in public buildings (and parking lots, which are 'extensions' of public buildings according to the most recent unofficial AG opinion) is off limits.

It's time to revisit Ga's concealed carry law.

Funny...I used rest-stops as one of my reasons for needing a CCW.

I stated that I transport a lot of negiotable securities between home and work (I live hundreds of miles from work and often telecommute). I said I often use rest-stops when I didn't telecommute and was afraid of being held up while sleeping in my car or using the restrooms at the rest-stops.

Got my CCW in Cali by using this and all this time, I could have just said. "Wait....I'm a general....You've heard of me right....Patton...that's right....George Armstrong Patton".

Rest stops are like buffets for predators. Last time I was at one, I thought about that. I mean, you're usually dizzy from having to pee, or from being road-weary. Even if you've got pretty good situational awareness, floating teeth sometimes trumps common sense. Armed or not, I never stop at them alone unless I'm with my big mean-looking dog. And I've trained the pooch to bark on cue ("Hey, look, there's a SQUIRREL!) so she's usually yapping her head off, head out the window, whenever I feel it might be fun or necessary upon pulling into a rest stop or making a late-night gas stop. At the least, it puts everyone else on alert, so I consider it community service. :neener:

Is that the first step to Taurus getting the next Army pistol contract?

Most rest stops, at least in Ohio, are "gun free zones"

A disproportionate amount of crime happens at them.

Easy conclusion to make.

Yes, they are a buffet for predators and I do not enter them without at least one buddy watching my back, 2x2 coverage.

Sad, but when the state aids and abets the criminals, what can ya do ?
