Restoring my father's S&W Model 66 for Father's Day

You sure they're flash chromed? They just look case hardened to me.

The cylinder release latch looks flash chromed though.

Some of them are, some aren't. I have M66's and M65's with both styles. The later guns(from what I've observed) have the case hardened parts(or mim with a case hardened appearance).

Incidentally, all of the M65's are PD trade ins and had lots of scratches and scuffs. I'm working on refinishing one of them right now. I started out with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to remove the majority of them, and then went to 1000 grit. After I got all the 600 grit marks out of the surface, I went to 1200 grit(from the 1000) and used a little oil while sanding/polishing. I'm debating on whether or not to use the 1500 grit I have, but I probably won't. I guess if I really wanted to get pimp gun shine I could go for some 2000 grit. Some flitz or other polishing compound will more than likely get the look I want.

Yo Cheese!!! Where's the pix?? I read 4 pages about this awesome 66 you restored, and NO PIX??? :banghead: What gives?? :D Seriously though, how did she turn out?? Did dad like it?? Really would like to see some pix if ya got them.. Im gettin a 66 (from auction) and I'm sure it's gonna need a little luv as well.. Got some great tips from the tread!! ;)

I agree with Mickstix! I would love to see the 66 and to know your Father's reaction. What a thoughtful thing to do! In my modest collection I have a 66-2 6". My Dad bought it new in 1982. I did some tweaking to the action but it doesn't need anything more. It's my most cherished revolver since I aquired it after my Dad's passing a few years ago. It will end up in my grandson's hands down the road. I can only hope that he remembers the true value of this 66. The 4 pages I just read made me smile and think back. Thanks Cheese.
