I can remember when I was around 18 your average SKS was going for around $150 bucks give or take. Nothing lasts forever, so I want to take the plunge on buying a Mosin-Nagant. (actually not really since since the rifle in ? is only $79.)

More specifically the rifle is a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Hex receiver rifle, Standard Grade offered at J&G SALES;mosin-nagant-91-30

I am only looking to buy this rifle, well because at it's price its expendable and shoots a caliber which rivals the 30-06 in power. I figure at $79, it's a pretty good bang for the buck.

1. Anyone have experiences or reviews for this particular rifle bought from J&G SALES?

2. Is it a fair deal or should I look elsewhere?

3. Also what can I expect when buying a "STANDARD GRADE" rifle with no handpick available? I could care less about the cosmetic experience so long as it functions reliably.

4. I am also considering waiting until the next gun show to buy one. What is the realistic market price I should expect to buy one at a gun show?

This is a pic of the rifle from the J&G website & their comments below it.

These are historical 7.62x54R caliber WWII era military bolt action rifles, used by the armies of the USSR. They are standard grade guns, and have the older desirable Hexagon shaped receivers. Includes the Russian soldiers bayonet and possibly some other accessories. Arsenal refinished in very good to excellent condition. Hand select not available at this time.

I appreciate all the help & info yall can give me!!

79 bucks is about what all the other online sellers are asking. Around here (Maine) if you go to a gun show or small gun shop, its going to be probably 25 bucks or so more from my experiance. But...There is no shipping charge. You can inspect before you buy. If you dont have a C&R than you have to pay the transfer fee. I payed 125 for my m44 and I know thats a few dollars high. But I was able to look it over, inspect the bore etc. I got the same accessory pack (sling, pouches, tool. Its in beautiful condition and it was bought 5 minutes from home with no anticipation with what the heck it was going to look like. With that said I have read many positive reviews with a couple exceptions about JG sales.

At $79.00 you are not going to lose much even if it winds up not being what you were expecting! I have been looking for me another Mosin but frankly I want it in my hands to inspect before I make a purchase. These guns can vary in quality so much; bore, wood, matching vs. non matching, refurb or no, that I don't wish to buy another online. I have a great M44 and I will buy a great 91/30 as soon as I find one but wait I will till I find what I am looking for!

i got mine FTF from a THR member (91/30) for 240 bux with a spam can (440 rds). Figure shipping, FFL transfer, plus shipping for ammo, should bring it about the same. I am happy with mine, matching serial except the bayo. I wouldn't pay more than $150 at the gunshow.

$79 is a good price, just figure a few dollars for shipping and whatever you local FFL guy charges to transfer the rifle. Ammo is still cheap and there are many-many sources for information on how to sporterize them or just use your imignition. You will be in the rifle around $110 when the smoke clears so the investment is not large. Hex receivers are easier for home gunsmiths to drill and tap than round receivers. Making an adjustable trigger is easy and they are loud and kick which makes them fun to shoot.
