Revolver as a "last ditch" gun?

To me a "last ditch" gun is something the Germans were building towards the end of WWII. Defintely not what I think of when we're talking about revolvers.

A revolver can be your first round of defense, your trusty HD gun, your primary back-up, your deep-cover BUG, your favorite Kit Gun, or your reliable backwoods companion. Basically it's up to the task for just about anything you need it for, no matter what kind of situation you're facing.

I see a shotgun or any rifle, even a 22 a better self defense weapon than a pistol. I have some nice pistols but if the SHTF I am just using the pistol to buy enough time to get my safe open or get in a vehicle to run away.

Every day carry is a DS .38sp. For more power, it's a 1917 .45. The plastic moon clips are fantastic. I can reload almost as fast as my 1911 .45. In cool weather, the 1917 is perfectly concealable (but heavy). For "bump in the night," Mossberg 500 12ga.

Last Ditch? First Round on the way back to the truck to get the 12ga or to the Safe for the AK.

I'm looking to add a 3" SP100 to my belt this spring, IMHO next best carry piece to a Colt Detective Special.

Last ditch? Well while I pack Glocks, usually sub-compacts I would easily pack any of these:

Any day of the week! But they are so nice and the Glock so ugly, I picked ugly to carry as I would not be upset to see old 'ugly' dinged up!

A revolver is a fine self defense gun and makes an excellent range gun. The 357 Mag can do most anything a person could ever want.

BYJ04 nailed it... That's why I like my 4" S&W 686 with handloads featuring 125 gr. Hornady XTP's. It's accurate even with me behind the trigger and I'm not exactly the greatest pistolero. Seven hard hitting rounds with another seven in the speed loader. Also have a Glock 19 but the 686 just seems to work better for me, but maybe that's cause I've had it for a few years and shot it a lot and the Glock is still fairly (only 140 rounds so far) new to me.

I try to stay out of ditches, as my bad knee makes it difficult to climb out.

I think of revolvers as excellent first choice handguns, not last at anything. I certainly recognize the utility of lighter-framed autos, on my duty belt, as I have to carry so much other stuff, too. On my own time, with no need to carry handcuffs, portable radio, Taser, and such, I am fine with revolvers.

If a revolver is your "last ditch" gun...you might want to re-evaluate where your hanging out.

I love my revolvers. I carry my S&W 442 all the time, and keep a Taurus 4" 357 in my glove box.

And if it ever come down to it, and I was left with two guns I would want my 870 and my Security Six.

I don't claim originality for the following -

If you can choose what to bring to a gun fight, bring a long gun. Bring a friend with a long gun.

Yes, I carry a revolver. But I'd much rather have the issue settled at long yardage.

Hi folks. First off, Happy New Year! Here's hoping that 2013 sees our rights and freedoms as gun owners preserved.

I've seen first hand the big rush to stock up on AR and AK rifles and mags. I too waited in the long line yesterday but not for what everyone else was after. I came home with a shiny new stainless 4" GP100. My reasoning:

It is reliable and very durable.
It is not prone to breakage, malfunction or excessive wear.
No magazines to buy, no springs to wear out.
Chambered in a fight-stopping caliber.
Six rounds is nothing to sneeze at, and can be reloaded relatively quickly.
Good for home defense, hunting, and can be concealed.
I can pass it on to my son with pride.

To my way of thinking, a revolver such as this is truly a "last ditch" gun, or the type of gun to "stock up" on if the future is uncertain. What everyone else is rushing out to buy just doesn't seem as versatile in the long run. I have my long-gun needs covered adequately, but if I'm going to have a spare or two in the face of an uncertain future - make mine revolvers.

Some folks shy away from revolvers because they seem so retro or old-fashioned, and of course many get their taste for whiz-bang tactical weaponry from the movies these days. But to me, the revolver is the most practical type of weapon to own in the long-term, with an uncertain political future. Bonus: it's probably the last type of weapon "they" will go after.

Curious about your thoughts on my line of reasoning.
Please stop insulting us. We all know 'last ditch gun' is da FEG. Fegyver e Gazkeszulekgyar. Okie dokie lets sick with FEG.
