For personal use (say off duty) I wouldn't have anything to say against an officer carrying a revolver.
For duty use? Sorry, you need to shake the cobwebs out and return to the 21st century.
Comparing:
An 8 shot .357 is NOT the equal of a 1911 .45.
- first, the 1911 has 9 shots on tap, not 8.
- second, while they may hold even for the first 8 shots, the auto beats the revolver hands down for the 9th and all subsequent shots.
- third, there are many auto designs that hold 13 - 20 rounds. Comparing those to a revolver, you will fair far better with the auto if faced with multiple attackers.
Reloads are significantly slower in a revolver. And an officer on duty is far more likely to have to reload than a private individual or even an officer from 30 years ago.
While I don't think that police need to gear up like for a military action, the reality is that an officer today is much more likely to have to face multiple armed threats than they used to be. While response times may have improved, they haven't improved enough.
The only advantage a revolver has is in the power of the cartridges. For an LEO who may have to deal with aggressive wildlife (like in Alaska or in remote areas were bears are common) that is an advantage. Anywhere else, that advantage pales compared to the sigificantly slower reload speed.
--as full disclosure, I'm not nor have I ever been an LEO.
