I am trying to decide between the Taurus 850 or 851, also looking at the S&W 642. Thanks
 
I'm thinking about picking up the new S&W 410,45LC,45 ACP revolver because well... I think it would be a dandy snake pistol...and I could leave the more lethal stuff stoked in the Mossberg.
 
Hello friends and neighbors // I'd spend the extra $40.00 on the S&W but I prefer the 442. I do not like my SD guns to be shinny, it is to easy for the BG to spot/track your gun.

Also if you have a problem with the Taurus I believe you have to ship it to Brazil.

I also vote 642. I got one a couple months ago from CDNN for $349, and am waiting on the $50 rebate. I saw one at a local gunshow yesterday for about $350, though I believe the rebate offer has ended.
Still, S&W is widely acknowledged to have excellent customer service, while Taurus is equally ackowledged as being abysmal. Plus, I've read way too many reports of new Taurus's having issues, forcing them to deal with the above mentioned abysmal customer service. Why even take the chance just to save a very few bucks ? Besides, you'll have better re-sale potential with the Smith. Go with the 642. ;)

Not to throw in a wrench, this isn't one of your three options and it looks like you want a small CCW and an enclosed hammer, but the Ruger Sp 101 is a dandy too and there is the added benefit of shooting in either single or double action.
 
I will recommend to, if you can, look at each one individually. Get a feel for what is best fit for you. Use the checklist to see which is in best condition, today I went to look at revolvers at Academy and just to get a feel for Taurus I looked at an 856. The display model they let me inspect had a really sharp forcing cone, the back and forth movement of the cylinder was very noticeable and 4 of the cylinders had a lot of wiggle when in full lockup, this was supposed to be a new gun but for me it didn't feel like it.
 
Though I have had good experiences with Taurus revolvers I still say the 642. I love my 637. The 638 was a good one too. But it was passed along to a good friend.
 
You'll never regret the purchase of either a 442 or a 642, though you'd probably regret the Taurus later when you realized that the Smith is a much better respected snubbie . . . and resale prices prove it when you step up later.

The SP101 is a nice revolver too, but it is heavier and bulkier . . . and what good is a CCW gun when you didn't have it on you when trouble surprises you like a stray lightning bolt in the dead sleep of night?

Get the Airweight snubbie . . . it is a gun you can carry "always."

IT HAPPENED TO ME TODAY . . .

I forgot my Airweight was in my pocket when I entered church. Getting ready to slide my keys in my pocket, I felt the Airweight Smith. Oops, it is illegal to carry in church in my state.:eek: "Honey, I forgot something in the car, I'll be right back!"

Yep, a gun that you even forget is in your front pocket is a gun you will "always" have when you need it! It might buy me the time to fight towards the shotgun, AR or one of my larger caliber handguns . . . not that I think the little Smith won't do the job well!!!
 
You can't really compare Taurus with S&W. I own several S&Ws and each is a fantastic gun. Taurus offers low cost and unreliable quality (though they are getting better) but not really anything else.

I can't help you about shopping online, but last weekend I picked up a NIB S&W Model 638. What was so unique about this particular model was it had the 2.5" barrel with the full length ejector rod. The gun balanced perfectly in my hand and had a much better feel to it than any of the Taurus snubbies I was looking at. For the money, go with the S&W.
 
Bud's is a good place to look online.
Of course the down side is that you can't handle it before you buy.
And you can't have it shipped directly to you, it has to be shipped to an FFL holder near you.

another good place online is gunsatcost.com.

They're actually located in Green Bay, WI (which is only 45 miles from me so I save the FFL transfer fee)
But their prices are usually better than gunbroker.com, or Cabela's.
 
Of the choices you listed, I'd say stick with the S&W 642. As an alernate, the Ruger SP101 that another member mentioned would also be a better choice than the Taurus.
