Now that's interesting. I had no idea that S&W didn't have complete physical drawings of their guns.

Yup, and it caused Uncle Sam to have a major upset when we first got into
World War Two.
For that matter when Springfield Arsenal wanted to set up and make 1911 pistols they ask Colt for a full set of blueprints. Colt didn't have them. The arsenal ended up disassembling a number of Colt pistols, measuring the parts and averaging the dimensions. I believe it took them over a year too do it.
