I usually take semiautos and revolvers to the range, even though I like revolvers better. This time I had a couple of new revolvers I wanted to try out. 22lr and 9mm ammo are cheap and easy to find, but I have revolvers that shoot those, too, so I decided to just do a revolver day and let the bottom-feeders cry in the safe. I'm glad I did it this way. I broke a finger on my dominant hand about six months ago, and this is my first range trip since then that it hasn't bothered me.

I shot at the local outdoor range at 7 yards - will go back to 15 after I get new glasses.

K22 - If you're feeling unsure about your shooting skills, try a K22 at seven yards. I think I would have hit a small apricot with all 50 rounds. All of my other 22 range revolvers became instantly obsolete after I got the Smith. I wasted time and money buying various other ones first.

GP100 Match Champion - This was my first time to shoot it, and I'm definitely not used to it yet. The SA trigger is weirdly stiff. The DA trigger is light and seems designed to stage slowly until you get to the tactile sensation of the SA part. Towards the end of 50 rounds I just started shooting it like a DA revolver - one smooth pull. That was better. The last few cylinders were DA only with a pretty quick squeeze and they looked pretty good. I think that's how I'll end up shooting it from now on. It definitely has potential.

Super Blackhawk - I put the 9mm cylinder in it to use cheap ammo. I grew up shooting a Single Six, so SA revolvers feel natural to me. It's also kind of silly to shoot a 6.5" revolver with big adjustable sights from 7 yards. I shot 50 rounds without a flier. The argument about 9mm ammo being inaccurate out of a 357 revolver has never impressed me.

Taurus Model 405 - A 2" medium-framed revolver chambered in 40 S&W. I've wanted to get a 40 caliber "range toy" revolver so that I can shoot zippy ammo that's inexpensive and easy to find. This was my first outing with my new-to-me 40. I brought moonclips, but didn't use them much. Usually four out of the five empties just fell out if I opened the cylinder and tapped the butt on the range bench. The recoil was spicy and fun, but not at all painful or tiring. It has a pretty good trigger for a Taurus. I was pleased with my accuracy. The first couple of cylinders were poor, but after that it was mostly palm-sized groups of five. I'm going to enjoy shooting this thing! The recoil was a little sharper than a similar 45acp revolver, but didn't shove quite as much, if that makes sense.

"If I didn't have a K22 I'd go get one ASAP. I'm not sure there is any better teacher for the handgun man."

I still shoot my Single Six in 22lr occasionally, but the K22 makes a mockery of all of the lesser quality 22 revolvers I owned before. I'm not at all a revolver snob, but the Smith K-frames are simply better than any other DA 22 revolvers I've shot.

Very nice!

A revolver day for me is a slow-it-down and take-my-time-to-get-it-right kind of day.

I think I get more out of those days than any others, as my shooting reflects on target when I am doing things right… or doing them wrong. ;)

Congratulations on a fun day out there, it sounds like you had a good time. Besides , any day shooting is better than any day at work. :)

Stay safe.

In 22RF revolvers, S&W Model 17 and 18’s are awesome. My Ruger Single Six holds its own with the S&W’s.

I do not have a Match GP100 in 22RF so no knowledge there but I suspect it would be a good option. The GP100 has a good reputation and my 337 Fed Mag and 44 Special versions are excellent.

But for range day shooting, an S&W Model 14 or 15 (38 Special) or the stainless equivalents, would be the cat’s meow for centerfire shooters. 38 Specials can be shot in 357 Mag revolvers, which is ok, but 38 Specials shot in revolvers chambered for 38 Special just seem to group a bit smaller than when fired from a 357 Mag chamber.

It seems that semi-auto pistols frequently have fixed sights while revolvers are usually available with adjustable sights. Semi- autos that I have updated with adjustable sights give similar gratification as revolvers with adjustable sights.
