Hey guys, just looking for some opinions on the following:

I currently own an S&W M65-3 4" Heavy Barrel. It's a great revolver. Thanks to Radagast's encouragement in the "Date S&W Revolvers" thread, I also have a M27-2 5" en-route:D.

My quandary is thus: Are these revolvers redundant/should I sell the M65?

I live in NJ, so CCW is out for right now, and when I move sooner or later I would prefer to carry my Gov't 1911 or pick up a Commander (or maybe a 3" M65/M66?). So, no reason to keep the 4" M65 for CCW.

The M65 is just a bit uncomfortable with full-bore 158 gr .357's. I have to imagine the heavier M27 will be more comfortable. No reason to keep the M65 based on comfort.

I could shoot the M65 in IDPA, but again, I've only ever shot my 1911 because that's what I would carry if I could. The M27 would be illegal in IDPA with it's 5" barrel.

I don't need the money or anything, was just kind of spitballing here. What do you guys think?

IMO a 5" M27 and a 4" M65 are both very different revolvers. They are both fun to shoot but not nearly the same so I see no redundancy there. I have a handful of .357 Magnum and .38 Special revolver and never feel I'm wrong for having more than one...

Keep it

My M-65 is the 2nd to last gun i'd give up. It will do just about anything in a pinch.
Its a four inch that I drilled and tapped for a scope. I shoot bullseye with it.
You can leave it around the home and not have to mess with a safety or wonder if it will feed.

The handgun in my collection that I consistently shoot the best is a S&W Model 65-5. It was pretty scratched and nicked up when I bought it online, but after two - three hours of going over it with some oil-wetted 600 grit wet-o-dry sandpaper (wrapping it around a fat popsicle stick for the flat areas and edges) followed by some Mother's Polish I got that stainless steel looking quite acceptable to me. After buying 300 rounds of some 158 grain Prvi-Partizan SJHP ammunition I took my first DA .357 mag. revolver and my first large (for me) online ammo purchase out to a buddy's farm to try them out.

My very first shot from 10-12 yards at paper with my new-to-me combination had me upset for a couple of seconds, thinking I had completely missed the target, but I had actually put a hole right in the middle of the black 1" bullseye. I immediately took down that target with a single hole as a reminder of what was possible for me with that ammo in that revolver.

I shoot that Model 65 better than any of my semi-automatics (better than my 1911, my Hi Power, my CZ82's) and better than any of my S&W K-frame .38 spl. revolvers. It is far from being my prettiest handgun, but for me it is definitely a keeper.

This post got pretty long - I guess you can tell I really like my 65-5. Since you asked, I recommend you hang on to that S&W 65-3.

I would keep it as well. I had a Model 13 with the heavy barrel and I regret selling it years ago. Would love a Model 27 with a 5" barrel.

I have had a bunch of S&W revolvers chambered for the 357 cartridge, K, L, and N frames. The ones I shot the most were the K frames. The L and N frames weigh a lot more and soak up the recoil but it isn't that bad from the K frame. That said, the only 357 I have left is a 27-2 and that is available. I have gone toward other cartridges. Keep them both, eventually, one will tell you.

The bigger problem is living in NJ. Perhaps a savings account for moving would be a better move.

Thanks for the advice guys. Think I'll keep the M65. Was just kind of thinking out loud and wanted some other thoughts.

Driftwood - really, really like those M1917's. One day.....

Real Gun - I'm working on moving, trust me, but my family has lived in the same area going back 4 or 5 generations. It's hard to just take off to another state when your entire family is so dug in to a particular place. I like guns, but I won't abandon family for them. Besides, if all the gun owners move out of Cali, NJ, CT, NY, etc. who will lead the fight to regain our rights in these states?

Keep them both. The 27 is a much heavier N frame while the 65 is a K frame. If you ever want or need to carry one for self defense you will choose the 65. The lighter gun when holstered on the belt is much less noticeable than the big 27. The 27 with the 5" would be a better gun to hunt with and absorbs the .357 mag recoil better than the 65.

Doesn't someone here... Pinned and Recessed perhaps, own like 30 .38/44s? :D

If you like it, buy it and enjoy it. This isn't China. You can own whatever you like without justifying the need. :)

Any reason not to keep it and use .38 Special for comfort and/or competition?

I'd keep it no matter what, but these were a couple of your considerations, so my $0.02 in answer.

Redundant?

Nah.. I don't have any redundancy in my humble set of wheelguns.

Keep any nice revolver you own because replacing it with a new one is difficult and expensive. I love 1911s just as much as the next guy but my safe has more revolvers in it than 1911s. I only carry revolvers for defensive use anymore. I handload all of my ammo and have over the years found the absolute best cartridge and load for "business use". And none of them will fit in any semi auto short of a Desert Eagle.

I read that as you're never going to move. Carry on.
