Based on many positive opinions I have just purchased my first autoloader... a RIA 1911 Commander. I am eager to get it out to the range and begin shooting. I have done quite a bit of searching but haven't found any recommendations on ammunition. I'm looking to pick up some for target/practice as well as defense. Any recommendations would be great. I'd like to pick up 500 or 1000 rounds for the price break but will buy a smaller box first to make sure it works well in my gun.

I have a related question as well. With the slide locked back the barrel will wiggle back and forth 1/16" or so. I assume this is normal but want to double check. I've fired friends 1911s but never noticed this.

Start at Wally World and get some ammo. If they have any it should be as cheap as they come. The standard FMJ will work great for starting to shoot.

The barrel has a slight taper at the end so that as the slide is forward, the bushing canrestrict the barrel movement (still should be a little). With the slide moving back and the barrel tilting down you need more room for thing to move freely, thus the barrel's smaller section is very loose in the bushing. It's OK for it to be a bit wobbly with the slide locked back.

Winchester white box 230 grain fmj, Remington UMC 230 grain fmj, and maybe a box or two of jhp. More variety is better, just suck it up and pay for it so you can find a brand that gun really likes. ;) Then stick with that brand.

For practice ammo any 230gr FMJ should work just fine. Of course the better (read more costly) the ammo, the 'finer' it should work, but I have never had a problem with even the cheapest FMJ in a 1911.

Good defensive ammo can be a little costly. Some 1911s can be a little finicky about feeding some brands of HP ammo, and the only way to know is to run some through it. Almost any of the major brands should function fine, but you still need to test out a box to be sure, then run a few hundred malf free rounds through it to be trust your life on it sure.

With the slide locked back the barrel is not held by the locking lugs, just the link and the bushing, so it has a bit of wobble room, it's normal, don't sweat it.

I went to MagTec 230gr. FMJ as they shoot to the same point of aim as my 230gr. Federal Hydrashok carry ammo. They are much less expensive as well.
