I have been kicking this one around for many a moon and have decided almost on my complete battery:
Elk/Bear Howa 1500 30-06 with Mueller 3-10x44
Elk/Deer Savage 110E 270 with 3-10X44 Mueller
Deer/Goats Remington 770 in 7mm-08 Swift 2-7x40
Goats H&R Ultra Hunter in 25-06 with Swift 4-12x50
Varmints/predators Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243 with 4-16X50 Mueller
Varmints H&R Ultra Varmint Fluted 22-250 with Hawke Mildot 6-24x44
I know a couple of them overlap but....one can not live on just one rifle can he???????? I was thinking of a 338 but an old football injury will not allow me to absorb that much recoil any more. have any other suggestion? I did forget one which i wuill be getting out soon A Weatherby Vanguard DLX in 270 with a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40. I don't need it but from the time I picked it up it's been calling my name. God Bless Jess:neener:

My only suggestion would be with a Savage for your Varmit rigs, rather than the NEF break opens. Yes, I know they have thousands loyal owners and almost a Cult following and are a great value. Essex

I heard the remington 770's reciever is only held on by a fiberglass epoxy. There are many stories of recivers disconnecting from their stocks.

First after looking and cost I have narrrowed my battery to only 4 rifles. They will be Howa 1500's in 06, 270, 243/25-06 and a Varmit in 22-250. YThe savage 100E 270 is my lone rifle at this moment. I can get all for around $ 2000.00 and they will allow me to hunt what ever suits me until I am to old for hunting. Jess :)

Assuming your definition of a complete rifle battery is limited to what you can hunt with them? If so you're not in too bad shape but...

Plinking? Where's your.22?
Precision smallbore? Where's your super accurate .22?
Guns of Rambo collection? Were's your M4-gery, AR15. AK47, AKM, AK74?
Guns of WWII - Allies collection? Where's your Garand, 03A3, P17, No1/No4 Enfield, MN 91/30, M38, M44?
Guns of WWII - Axis collection? Where's your Arisaka, K98, Carcano, etc?
Guns of Cold War collection? Where's your CETME, G3, FAL, M1A?
Guns of the nuetral countries collection? Where's your Swede M96/M38, Swiss K31?
How you gonna go after Cape Buffalo without a .400 Jeffrey?

I couldn't live without these.

I do understand your point I have an un-issued 98 Mauser with Nazi stampimg, Mauser 48 and Yugo SKS and wouldn't mind a FAL in 308 but that said i have never had much use for a 22, Never really enjoyed shooting them all that much, but with that said a heavy barrel 10/22 would be my 22 if i go that way. If I plikn it will be with a 22-250 or my SKS. I love the ole military weapons but my eyes and iron sites don't go together. I'm good to 50 yards and after that i could just as well throw rocks:what: at the target. I spent 20+ years in the service so the military hardware is ok but had enough of those many moons ago. Jess

Two really nice rifles would do the job; a varmint rifle and a game rifle. Every North American game species has been killed with .30-06... or .270, or .300 magnum, or 7mm magnum, or .308, or...
Well, you get the picture.

A .22-250 is a great varmint rifle but if you start plinking with one, you will learn the hard facts about barrel life trying to push 40 grains of blazing powder down a .224" hole. Maybe a .223 with good ammo, I have not seen the accuracy claimed for the surplus and imitation surplus.

Then you could put the money saved into first class rifles with really good scopes.

Not in terms of specific rifles, as that is something of a never-ending quest, but only in terms of caliber, I have narrowed down my battery to the following:

Bare minimum:

.22 - obvious reasons.

.223 - More plentiful than .220 swift or .22-250. I am a fan of all these little twenty caliber rounds, but the .223 beats them out in terms of availabilty.

.30-06 - All around hunting round. Oddly, except for my Springfield 03-A3, I don't actually own a rifle chambered as such. I choose this because of a well-earned track record, availability, and the fact that is is more than enough gun for anything I envision hunting in my lifetime. I currently use a 7mmRemMag in place of this round, and I have no complaints. If I ever decide to get a new hunting rifle, this will replace that rifle.

Not necessary, but desired:

6.5x55 Swiss - I like my Mauser chambered as such, and I am going to buy a Ruger chambered thusly. I can envision that rifle taking the place of my
.270. A great round, the .270, but I just like the swiss round better.

7.5x55 Swede - I say this round only because I really, really enjoy shooting my K31. I would go so far as to say it is my favorite rifle to shoot. The cartridge itself seems to be a pretty good cartridge, but the reality is that I simply like shooting the gun.

7.62x39 - I now have 4 rifles chambered in this useful little round, and while none of those guns are tackdrivers, they are all accurate enough. Fun to shoot, my personal choice as a SD/HD/Battle cartridge.

.308 - Don't own one currently, think the round is too good not to own a shooting example. End of story on this one.

There are other calibers that I shoot now that I like but could do without (at least in theory), and the first one of those is the 7.62x54. I enjoy shooting that round, and I certainly enjoy the economy that it entails, but the reality is that that round isn't better, and in some cases is worse, than the calibers I mentioned above. I also would like a .22 Hornet, but I would prefer that in pistol form.

Jim I tend to agree with you but I like a back up just in case. My Savage 110 270 will shoot around an inch at 100. I want the 06 or even 7 mag for elk and the 22-250 will fill the bill on critters and even goats. If the money is right I have looked at the Weatherby Sub-moa as the rifles and Muellers for scopes. I ove the German #4 and the illuminated dot it's is perfect for my eyes. Glass is close to Vari-X II. Jess
